Hi everyone, I need a bit of pointers from the more experienced ones before heading towards the final decision although at first this seems to me that its straightforward but I would like to get your views.

At the moment my setup is 5D MKIII as the main body and I use 5D MKII as backup and also have the 7D as I do a bit of bird photography but not exactly my source of income, and quite honestly I rarely use the 7D nowadays and on the rare occasion I do I just feel it short of performance because am so used to the 5D MKIII, well you get the idea :).
So now time has come for me to get the 1DX and am thinking what should go. Is it as straightforward as the 5D MKII and 7D should go? Won't I regret getting rid of the crop body?
My lenses by the way in the long range ones is only the Canon 300mm f/4 IS which when I use it I am always tempted to use with the 5D MKIII,

Decisions decisions.. so please give me some ideas.

Probably ideally would be to still retain the 7D? Push comes to shove?

Many thanks
Amin

Sell 5D2, keep 7D for extra pixel-reach. See how you get on.

Looking ahead, ideal would be to sell 7D too, and replace with a longer lens on the 1DX.

Amin,
I would keep the 7D and sell the 5D2. My reasoning behind this is that you may feel at a later date that you do need the added reach and the 7D certainly gives you that. Moreso, you will still have the wideopen f/4.0 aperture at the cropped FL on the 7D body.. Instead of having to add a TC on the FF bodies.

I miss the extra reach for cricket that my MKIV afforded me, Im now in the process of buying a 7D to use as a cricket workhorse which I will use alongside my 2 1DX's

For weddings and social events the 1DX and your 5D3 will be perfect. I moved from the 1DX and 5D3 combo as I wanted the button layout to be the same so I sold the 5D3 and bought a second 1DX.

You do not mention anything else that you shoot so Im am just giving you details of my own experience

Richard and Tug, that really sound wise, its starting to dawn on me that getting rid of the 7D really would be a mistake, even though I rarely use it but as you said Tug that extra reach when needed really the 7D is irreplaceable.
My shooting is very versatile and there would be times I would be doing more of one or the other but overall I cover mostly macro portraits, events which at times I need the high ISO, and guess what certain situations that the silent shooting of the 5D MKIII is highly essential so even just for that I would need to keep the 5D MKIII if for nothing else in case the 1DX doesn't have silent shooting. I have heard that the shutter is quite noisy. So on those times that often I have to cover a live documentary shooting that filming would be going on the silent shooting is absolutely necessary, that came as a huge bonus for me in the 5D MKIII.
On the long run like Richard said I could be eventually looking for the 300 mm f/2.8 and get rid of the f/4 one, but I wonder if that would make me want to still get rid of the 7D? I keep remembering always the saying that one can always do with a longer reach so if eventually time comes that I can afford the 300 mm f/2.8 to replace the 300 mm f/4.0 will I think time for the 7D to go? Will see :)
But anyway it seems that your above advice makes sense so only the 5D MKII should go. And Richard you mentioning about you missing the reach of the 7D on your cricket shoots seems to nail the issue for me.
Thanks very much for your kind input and help

Amin,
I miss the extra reach for cricket that my MKIV afforded me, Im now in the process of buying a 7D to use as a cricket workhorse

I use the 1dx and the mkIV .. if I use the 1dx and 400m lens I get less reach.. but the extra pixels and crop ability makes up for the reach and the quality is even better..Cant afford 2 1dx :(

Saying that... I would have a 7d for cricket as thats slightly more reach than the mkIV

Thanks Waldorf, seems to me that 7D needs to stay, at least for now. So will have to dig deeper into the pockets for the upgrade, only 5D MKII will go. Going to be a big hole in pocket, but 1DX needs to come. I wonder what they sell for new at the moment. Haven't checked for prices for quite a while now hoping they have dropped a bit,

The 1DX does have a quiet shutter mode but it isnt as quiet as the 5D3.

The only thing letting the 7D down is the poor noise handling at higher ISO's.

You will love the 1DX but it is a heavy beast, especially with IS laden L lenses attached to it.
I use mine with both the 400mm on one and the 70-200 on the other when shooting sport. I had the 1.4 TC on it the other day and was very happy with the results, I did still however miss the reach my old MKIV gave me with the TC fitted.

Retaining the wide aperture with the 7D whilst having the crop factor, has to be the biggest plus. Well for me it would be.

Good luck with the search, they are now starting to come on the second user market so keep your eyes and ears open and let everyone know that you are looking for one.

Thank you everyone, I am going to bite the bullet. A mint condition 5D MKII going to be on the market soon :) and my shopping for the 1DX begins. Thank you again everyone for your helpful input I am very clear in what direction to go now

Am in the market now for a canon 1DX, finally got the funds and the time has come so if anyone out there has any tips where to find one or where is the best place to buy one from please let me know, would be greatly appreciated.
I must be honest I haven't as much clicked to look for deals on it and was first trying to make sure that I was going for one based on the maximum price they are sold for, so now looking for best deal.

Thanks
Amin
