Upgrading to a 4k monitor

Hi, one for the PC experts! I have just moved from my laptop to a desktop and have a decent spec PC that is running a geforce GT710 2gb DDR3. I am rather underwhelmed by the 1980 x 1080 display and rather than go half way to 2560 x 1440 am looking at full 4k.

My question is will this card support 4k (3840 x 2160) at 60 Hz via HDMI (this card does not have displayport output but I see HDMI to displayport cables are available.) Help appreciated!!!!

yes it will........see specs below from Nvidia website

You say a decent spec PC but that is not a very good card, if the rest of the spec is similar you will struggle with 4K
 
Also looking at upgrading, to 4k, so will be keeping an eye on this thread. Interested to know, what monitor you are going for, or are you just checking pc specs at the moment?

Processor Intel Core i5-2400 @ 3.19GHz
Graphics NVIDIA GeForce GT 710 2gb ddr3
Memory 16GB DDR3
240 gb SSD
1TB HDD

Novabench score is 933 if that means anything to anyone!

Resolution isn't everything. Colour gamut and accuracy are arguably more important than ultimate resolution from a photography point of view. I can't see anything in the spec of that monitor regarding coverage of the sRBG colourspace or colour accuracy.

I have the luxury of a pair of 4K monitors on my main system, I bought a couple of years ago and selected the Dell P2715Q as these had 100% sRGB colour Gamut, they are have probably been superceded by something better by now.
 
Just to clarify, not playing any games on the PC, using LR3 and Affinity for editing which is all it needs to run.

I'm not sure, but some apps don't scale well on high res monitors (icons / fonts are super small) and Lr3 is quite old.

Snap. I've got a couple of them two and it makes a very nice set-up.

I would also say that if I'm working from home I use one of them from my works laptop and it works fine. Unless you are gaming the graphics card doesn't matter much.
 
Well to close off I bought a Samsung 4k 28" monitor and the card drives it very well at full resolution but will only run a 30 htz. I sure this may be a problem for some but I cant see any issues at all videos play fine as well. Biggest issue was explaining to the wife why I had to upgrade 3 weeks after buying the full HD one (sold that so not a major loss overall) The 4k is way better much clearer screen and so much more pleasant to use.
 
Which model did you purchase?

The drivers are up to date, but I'm sure you are correct about the HDMI connection, unfortunately the card only has an HDMI out although the monitor has displayport in.

If I'm honest I am seeing no problem running at 30hz at all, Im not watching films or gaming just standard web and photo stuff.

The 30hz will be fine for most console type gaming and the watching of any films due to consoles limiting a vast number of games to 30fps and video following suit at 30fps in some regions and 24fps in others.

Using 30hz for prolonged periods of time for intricate work where by you are sat within twice the distance of the monitors diagonal size can cause strain. This strain will lead to headaches and fatigue and could even result in degrading sight but for the latter to happen you do need to be using it none stop for a number of hours a day.

Checking over the monitor I can see that it will happily take 60hz over both hdmi and display port so I would hazard a guess that either the cable isn’t the correct hdmi version or that the card doesn’t support 60hz 4K.

The chipset May support 60hz 4K but it is up to the manufacturer of the card to include that support which may not be the case for the age of the chipset and the competitive nature of this lower end market when it comes to price end point.

If it ever does bother you, a swap out to a new GPU with confirmed support shouldn’t cost more than about £30.
 
Thanks again Andrew. swapped the HDMI lead to the one supplied with the monitor but no change. The lower refresh rate isnt at all noticeable but Ill be aware of your comments and may at some point upgrade the GPU if it becomes an issue. Meantime I'll just enjoy the much improved picture!
