Upgrading my body

Right on the way to Australia we are either going to stop off at Singapore or Hong Kong for a few days, so I have got half an idea of upgrading my body. I currently have a D50 so I guess the logical upgrade is a D80 or D200. Will the step up to a D80 be worth it or should I concentrate my price hunting skills on the D200?

Anyone know any stores in Singapore or Hong Kong? I tried Google but didn't have much joy!

Thanks

The D80 is a great camera, and tbh the differences from the D200 arent that many. The D200 has much better build (inc weather sealing), and it has the Nikon 'pro' layout rather than their 'enthusiast' layout. It also has 5fps rather than 3. But seriously, thats about it!

I went for a D200 though.... :p

:agree: & I can't see the price being too much more for the D200 over the D80 - If it was less than £200 I'd go for the D200 - I had a choice between the two new D80 or used D200 & went for the latter ... Paul ;)

Well first of all I know :canon: , but a few of my mates have d200's and they seem to be a pretty damn good camera. Well built, good features and i would imagine a lot better to use over a d80. I would have thought it would have been a similar jump for like the 400d to the 30d.

Hmm, I have heard about people going to the far east to "upgrade their body".

Michael.

D200 is what I would go for given the same situation tbh. After playing with both, just for a bit of fun on jessops once, it was quite clear, the D200 simply felt far superior.

What would be a good price then for a new D200, body only, from the Far East or in the UK?

I managed to get my D200 for £560 a month ago - its a refurb with 6 months warranty and assuming the file naming is accurate had taken 400 shots. Completely pristine, couldn't tell it from new.

If you can find one new in the UK for £750 (import or domestic) you'll be doing well.

EDIT - £765 inc postage here.

I'm sure buying abroad would be cheaper still, but check first whether or not the warranty on the D200 is international - if not, buying from somewhere with UK seller/manufacturer warranty is a safer bet.

I was just about to answer your question as I found a big store in Singapore doing the D200 for £848. Which I thought was about £150 cheaper then Warehouse Express. But just checked that and Warehouse Express are now showing it for £815! Am I going mad or have Warehouse Express dropped the price today?

Beware of warranty issues. If you have a problem with it when you get home and have to return it to the country you bought it from, will it actually be worth the savings in the long run?

If it was my money I would be looking for a decent quality second hand but as with everything in life you pays your money and you makes your choices.

Excellent, thanks for the first link. I was guessing the other day that my body had done over 10,000 shots - the software says just over 12,000. Not sure how many I can expect, but the shutter's been playing up recently...

My D200 has done around 24,000 in 18 months. There are no hard and fast rules to shutter life but I would expect to get over 100,000 without problem - more likely double that
