Upgrading from my Canon 400D - Suggestions?

Im going to upgrade this year to a new Canon 50D

Are you going over to Nikon in that case youll need new lenses as well, thats if you already have canon fit lenses

Youll probably get a good S/H 40D at reasonable price

Dont go to nikon, stick with Canon.
What lenses do you currently have?
Get yourself a good second hand 40D, you wont regret it :)

Not sure re Nikon'd exactly, but the Canon 40 / 50 D are very good and would be a good upgrade, allowing any lenses you currently have to be used, obviously, if you only have the kit lens, this won't really be an issue.

i've just upgraded from the 400D to a 50D and am still in disbelief at how good a camera it is. stick with Canon and get yourself a 40/50D depending on budget

I only have the kit lens at the moment so a switch over wouldn't be an issue. Do the Canon 40/50D pop up much here in the classifieds? I don't know anything about buying second hand, but presume buying from here would be safest. I will look into them now anyway. Anymore suggestions welcome.

there's a load of 40 d's on mpb photographic at the moment, i'm toying with the idea of buying another!

Why did you want to move to Nikon? As you say if you're going to now would be a good time.

I think as when you buy any camera the same old advise og go and hold one before you buy (or relevant newer verions). Feel and ergonomics will be different, 400d is a lot smaller \ lighter than 40d, same for Nikon ones. If you're changing consider Sony and the others as well...

I've just taken the plunge and bought a 40D off AVforums. Started a similar thread to this a little while ago which convinced me that it would be a significant upgrade from my 350D.

At present I mainly have Sigma lenses and don't have the funds to buy top of the range Canon "L" glass. From the reviews I have read, the 50D with its higher Megapixel count will exacerbate any shortcomings of lower quality glass. This and a few other factors lead me to the 40D over the 50D.

Hope this helps.

Out of curiosity, why do you want to upgrade? What do you want to do, that the 400D can't do (or can't do well enough)?

If the only lens you have is the kit lens, then it seems highly likely that another (or a different) lens will be of more use to you than a different body. Plus lenses represent better investments than bodies; they don't deprete so fast.

I would say stay with Canon and go for the 40D, I made the jump to 40D from 350D and what a difference! Another option is, as StewartR mentioned is to perhaps buy a better lens/another lens if the 400D isn't really restricting you in the way you shoot.

The best 'upgrade' you can do is buy better lenses, not changing the body to another make with no real benefit.

If all you've had with the 400D is the kit lens, its the same as buying a fast car and not taking it out of 1st gear!!

i upgraded from a 400d to a 40d and its the best thing ive ever done, its an awesome camera really is, JUST DO IT
Ive only had it a month or so and my picture taking has gone to a new level.

^^^ but he doesnt have any decent lenses! A 50D (or similar) strangled by a kit lens would be criminal!

I have been using a 400d for the last couple of years and have had some cracking shots. As said it is all about the glass you put in front of it!
Upgrading your kit lens and adding others to the bag as and when you need them will make a lot more difference than changing the body up untill the point you start finding the limitations of the body itself. I don't think you are going to find those while using the kit lens.

Really depends how much he want to spend, the above pic was taken with a 17-85 IS which was the kit lens for the 40d... Yon can now pic up a mint 40d body and 17-85 IS for £500. ;)

I am looking to buy new lenses, two at max though. I just feel like upgrading now as I probably will later anyway, and I was hoping there would be some bargains about now (after christmas).

40D, grid focusing screen & battery grip for sale here and t'ebay. Needs to go please. Check my posts or find me on t'bay.

Another upgrader here from 400D to 50D - however I had already upgraded the kit lens from the 400D early on.

I agree with the others, invest in lenses first and then change the body further down the line.

40D, you'll never get buyers remorse.

Yes, there's the 50D but the low noise at high ISO is unmatched in either the 50D or the 7D. Fair do's they have more pixels, but 10mp is really as high as anyone needs to go unless you're doing serious pro stuff, even then it's questionable.

The new 1d mk4 has 16 megapixels so Canon didn't feel the need to go higher.

What should convince you even more is that I still miss my 40D, I'm a 7D and 5D MkII owner.

Couldn't agree more with whats been said about upgrading lenses before the body. The difference between my 400d with the kit lens and my 400d with a 70-200 F4L is amazing, it completely changed the camera! Go for lenses before the body, then if down the line you are not using it as much as you like, you can sell the lenses and get a high proportion of the money back! :)

I could get a good lens that I can use on the 400d and the 40d, any recommendations for a good all rounder? sorry if these posts sound ignorant but I am looking on the net at lenses etc but anyone recommendations are great.

My first lens was the Sigma 18-200mm OS - in fact I still have it. Good superzoom that covers a wide focal range.

On the downside it is a little bulky and no doubt image quality isn't quite as sharp as a Canon lens. I thought it was a good start though!

Another vote for improving your glass first.

I ditched the kit lens with my 400D for a 10-22 and Nifty 50. I then got a 70-200 f/2.8 IS L.

I lived with my 400D whilst upgrading the lenses for 2.5 years and watched my photography improve (due to practice, experience and better glass!).

I have only recently upgraded the body, sticking with the same glass.

Just to add to this, I'm going to look for both a new lens s/h and keep my eyes out for a 40d, are there any other good forums/ s/h online stores?
