Hi guys, I've recently sold my Canon 500D to upgrade. I purely do photography as a hobby so by no means am I great, but I enjoy it - so thought I would treat myself to something new / better.

I have a budget of say, £1000 and would ideally like a lens included in that price. I mainly do automotive photography, so attend car shows / meets to capture coverage.. I have been looking at the Canon 7D (would like to stay Canon) - what do you guys think?

Any other suggestions appreciated. I'd like to start creating videos of shows too so good video capability is important too :-)

Many thanks,
Lauren

Video's not my thing- but I understand the 70d is rated highly for it's video. You should be able to pick one up with an STM lens for under your budget. The STM lenses are designed to be quiet focussing- so you can use them shooting video without the mic picking it up.
Do you still have some lenses- or did you sell them all?

Okay cool, I'll check that out!

I had two lenses, one was a Canon 50mm which wasn't really practical for car shows as you'd have to stand really far back. It was quite difficult to get shots without something walking in front haha!

I purchased a Sigma 10-20mm later down the line, I liked that but the quality compared to the Canon lens wasn't great to be honest.. so ended up selling them both :)

I hear good things about the Canon 10-22 but I never tried it. I recently came across a 7D that was basically brand new (2700 clicks) for super cheap so I bought it. My first body is a 5DIII so it is not really fair to compare but I will say it seems to be a pretty good camera. The image quality is good and I was surprised on how good the focus system is. I have not really kept up with the latest crop cameras from Canon sense going full frame but I would at least take a look at them before making up your mind. Good luck!

Hi Lauren

For your budget, you can get the 70D with 18-55IS STM lens http://www.camerapricebuster.co.uk/Canon/Canon-Digital-SLRs/Canon-EOS-70D-With-18-55mm-IS-STM-Lens

The 70D is an excellent camera, gets a good following and reports to have good video as well...

My advice would be to try to have a play with them and see what they do for you. Also don't forget as you jump to the xxD / xD series, they can increase in weight, but do increase in size, so you need to be comfortable holding them.

Hope it's of help...

If you can squeeze to £1100 or so, I recommend the 70d with the extra range of the 18-135 stm. Very good lens for stills & video.
Or go grey and knock a couple of hundred off.

Thanks a lot for your help guys, much appreciated! Been looking at the 70D and it does read some great reviews so very tempted by that! That's for the link above, shows some great deals!

Off work thanks to the bank holiday so going to head over to Jessops to see what I think of the 70D in person today :-) will keep you guys posted!

The 7D is an outdated piece of tech, you would be better of going for the newer 70D.

Yeah I'm pretty set on the 70d after reading up on it so think I'll treat myself!
