Hi guys, I have been out of photography for a few years. I own a 450d which has had an awful of use for a 4 year period. I was really happy this camera, but once I had 'mastered' how to use the camera I always felt like I wanted to upgrade. At the time it was the 50d (but I didn't have the money). Since then the 450d has had a problem with the shutter - and I haven't used it in about 2 years.
I am now in a position that I could upgrade - I was thinking of getting a 70d (based on nothing more than the fact that it is the next 'level' up from 450d) - seems to be good value (and cash back available at the moment).
The video option looks good (but isn't a priority for me at all). I always wanted an increase in FPS and better range (and handling) of ISO.

In your experience would the 70d seem like a good option? Is there something else I should consider (I have EF-S lenses - so would want compatibility with those)

Thanks in advanced

Matt

Go for it.
I went from a 300D to a 40D (now 6d) and on each occasion it was wonderful to have a newer model camera with a more 'solid' feel to it.

You don't mention what kind of photography you plan to do, but unless it is specialised to a particular sort, then I am sure that the 70D will be an improvement.
Have you had a look on the classified section? There may be some there suited to your budget.

the 70D is an excellent value camera now with the recent 80D release pushing new prices down.

The autofocus is a huge step up from the 450D (seriously, this is a great improvement) and you can expect some better noise handling too. When viewed at pixel level the noise won't look as different as you might expect but you have quite a few more pixels so when viewing the image as a whole the end result is cleaner.

Thanks guys

Yes it would be for general photography - nothing specific

Would the noise handling not be too much better than the 450d then?

Thanks

Matt

I didn't find my 450D too bad with noise, in fact the images from that little camera are equally as good as my 7D, I wish I had never sold it. If I were you, I would consider upgrading lenses before the body. However, the 70D or the 760D would be a good replacement and forget the fact that the 760D is a rebel.

I'm currently considering selling my 7D and getting a 760D. I contacted Wex this morning and asked them for a part exchange price for my 7D against a 760D, waiting for their reply...:)

Spend the extra and get the 80D. The sensor tech is MUCH improved over the previous crop sensor bodies. However if this camera is overkill for you then consider the 750D/760D for a much more budget oriented replacement. Which camera depends ultimately on how, what you shoot and how you want to edit. (Jpeg vs RAW)

At pixel level you will probably see about a one stop improvement (maybe more, this is a guestimate). Now this is not to be sniffed at, but remember you also have a lot more pixels so noise will be less apparent from the 70D if an image is viewed at the same size/distance at a 450D.

Thanks for the ideas. I do love my 450d - but there is a problem with the shutter - which is why it hasn't been used in ages - and why I am looking at upgrading. I am quite happy with me lenses at the moment (I mean don't get me wrong - I always want more/better lenses - but happy for the moment)!

Is the 80d that much better? what else does it offer over the 70d? I guess the 760d would still be a big upgrade over the 450d. I usually shoot in raw - but to be honest - I am not sure I make the most of this - just a amll bit of editing in Adobe Lightroom

Thanks

Matt

I agree, Matt. If you are having problems with the shutter, then that wouldn't justify a repair on the 450D. The link below will give you some idea of the difference between the 70 and 80. The 760D has a better processes than the 70D.

A mate went from his 450D to a 60D and loved the difference with the new camera.

If you are looking at the 70D, you should possibly be able to get some good deals as the new 80D has been launched as has been said.
Not sure what the differences are price wise, but if you can stretch to it, bearing in mind how much you used / kept the 450D for, I'd buy the newest you can get...

I went from a 600D to a 70D a few months ago. A 760D would have given similar image quality but the reason the 70D won it for me was it has a dedicated button for BBF and better ergonomics.

The latest information coming out is that the RAW files from the 80D allow for more shadow detail to be extracted. So depending on how you shoot and what you shoot it may benefit you. What I'm saying is if you have the money and don't upgrade your camera that often then the 80Dmakes more sense bearing in mind you use Lightroom and are able to extract the most amount of data from the RAW files.

If your budget allows, get the 80D as it is an awesome camera with soo many new features compared to your 450D. If budget doesn't allow though, the 70D is still a great camera and I'm sure you would be pleased with either one, you just have to decide if the price increase for the 80D ove the 70D is worth it to you.
