Upgrading from a Nikon D700

Apologies for bringing this back to the top but after a LOT of time deciding whether to go D750, D800 or D810 when upgrading my D700, I ended up just buying another D700.

I tried the D750, just didn't like it and I wasn't prepared to get used to it. Having churned out 1200 photos on a sports shoot for a school I decided that the file sizes on the D8xx models would just be totally impractical.

No client has ever questioned the quality of images I've supplied from the D700 so I couldn't justify the cost of anything else. I'm shooting quite a bit of sports now though and the logical move is a used D4 when they can be had for around £1600-£1800

interesting @MissingMan!
i appreciate it'll all be personal and subjective, but what did you not like about the d750 in comparison to the d700?

i do love my d700s... just wish they'd perform a bit better in lowlight, which i shoot a lot :)

Well I didn't like the tilting screen for sure. I have no doubt it would be really usefu, l but I also have no doubt that the way I chuck my cameras around would mean I'd be looking at an expensive repair on more than one occasion, because I'd use it and break it. It didn't feel solid enough either, and as I've mentioned earlier in the thread I just don't like the 'amateur' button layout compared to 'pro' layout of the D700.

Ultimately though I know that if I'd gone for the D750 I know I'd be buying a camera that I would never be happy with. £1300 is a lot of money for a compromise whereas when I spent £1800 on the D700 I knew it was exactly the right camera for me. A decision that has very much been confirmed by me buying another one quite a few years later. I'm near certain that my next body will be a used D4.

I'm happy with the D700 in low light though. Do I wish it was better? Yes of course, but I find it to be easily good enough for my needs.

I ripped straight through the flex cable for the rear screen with a duster... I guess they don't make them like they used to 'eh?! :D

Having said that, I've used the tilty rear screen today and it was really handy to have when shooting low and trying to achieve focus in LV on the face.
