Upgrading from 300D to 400D is it worth it ?

Right , I use my 300D for mainly sports (Football / Motorsports) & Wildlife and have been getting frustrated with the lack of AI servo in manual modes and the small continuous buffer size. I'm in the progress of negotiating with the wife for the purchase of a 70-200 f2.8 lens & a new body. Would the 400D be a reasonable step up from my 300D (£350 at Tescos) or should I carry on with the haggling for a 30D (lots more :().

Anybody got any views or know of any articles that I can browse ?

Thanks

Brian

I would presonally get the 30d.

DPreview have them side by side

The bigger screen is fantastic - its the same one as on the 30d as I understand it, and probably the only reason (along with the cheap price) that we're upgrading Sue's 350d to a 400d. The other reason being is that she has smallish hands and the 350d/400d is a perfect fit whereas the 30d is too big for her (so she says).

Definitely hold one first. The 300D, while not a really big camera, is still quite bigger compared to the 400D.

I reckon it would be an OK up-grade from the 300D, but not the 350D. As they say, try before you buy. I did find the 400D a little on the small size (a bit smaller than the 350 I own), but fitting the battery grip might make things more comfortable for you. And for £350 through Tesco's it's a steel :)

Don't discount the 30D as you get better build quality, spot metering and selectable 3 or 5 fps burst mode, and some other things above the 400D.

I reckon you might find the 400d a little small.

Never thought of that , hadn't realised it was smaller than the 350D :(.

How the **** do I convince Mrs G that I need a 30D and a lens

I have a 400D and it's a decent camera which I'm very happy with. However with the benefit of hindsight I wish I'd bought the 30D tbh. Mainly because of the build quality and size. I have put a battery grip on my 400D and that makes it feel much better!
Don't get me wrong, I love my 400D. I guess you always want what you haven't got

If you wanted a proper size body, maybe you should have looked at Nikons.... :p

now now Joe :nono: :D :canon:

I thought the 350D and the 400D were exactly the same size?

They are, for sure :)

that's for saturday nights ;) , will have to think of something extra for the camera

its possibly time to put your behind the sofa positon to work :naughty:

But honestly, IMO I've used both the 400D and my 20D, I like the 20D better as the 400D is just to small for me and with the 30D your get the extras that everyone has always moaned that your didn't get on the 20D e.g spot metering, bigger screen etc
