I own a Canon 400D at the moment, if you owned this what would you upgrade too and why ?

Thanks
Scud

I upgraded to a Canon 5D MKI.
I was tempted for ages to upgrade to a 40 or 50D but I wanted to get into wedding and portrait work and the others only would have hindered me eventually so decided to pay a little bit more and go full frame and have high-iso shots quite well.
Saying that, I'm just in the process of buying my second 5D MKI as a back-up for weddings.

Again if you are looking at getting into wildlife and sports I'd probably recommend a 40 or 50D as they are still crop sensor cameras.

Hope that helps
Jamie :)

Well whats your budget first of all ? l went from the 400d to the 50d and l think it was a great upgrade. However you need to decide what you want from your new one.

What do you want to do that you can't do now?

Glass may well be a better upgrade than a body!

I went from a 400D to a 40D and never regretted it. The image quality appeared better (but that may be down to the lens), bigger viewfinder, clearer screen, felt more comfortable in my hands and more versatile. I guess it depends on what you want your camera for though and glass quality has a big (if not bigger) impact in your final images.

:agree:

As Ed said, why do you want to upgrade. The reason why I upgraded from the 20D to a 1D MKII was because the 1D offered better autofocus speeds, more autofocus points, weather sealing with my L series lenses, better ISO above 400/800, and because the upgrades of the 30D or 40D available at the time, just weren't offering anything more than my 20D. I felt that although the 20D was delivering good images, I needed that extra capability offered by the 1D for the motorsports / aviation photography that I do.

However I also agree with Ed that an investment in good lenses will pay off far more than a new body.

You question is too open to really give an answer. What subject matter do you photography, what lenses do you have, what can you do with your existing camera, what's your budget......

Depends on the reason for upgrading, if you like the size and build quality but just want something newer, then the 550d. Bigger, faster and better built, the 7d. Better image quality, upgrade the lenses first.

Hi,
Yes depends on your intended use and budget. 40D is a great all round camera and good fps for action stuff. It has everything as a good step up. The 5D is a full frame and is simply a beautiful camera for portrait and scene stuff. Not so hot on fast action as the fps is not so good. Also quite a bit more expenseve than the 40D and some lenses won't fit it!

Dunc

its all down to what you want to shoot and whats you budget?

for example, you normally wouldn't get a 5d mark II for wildlife because its recommended for portraiture and landscapes, so you would be more inclined to get the 7D.

also do you want crop format or Full-Frame?

I went from the 400D to a 50D.

The only reason for this was I was after a 2nd hand canon 100-400 and the guy affered me the 50D and the lens at a good price.
I found the 50D to be much better for me as it is alot bigger.

I went from 400d to 50d. Its fantastic. nice big grip that fits my fingers, bigger screen, 5fps. its awsome. I still use the 400d as it suddenly seems so compact.

Best thing is higher iso's are much more useable. i found i couldnt really push the 400 past about iso 400. but the 50 is happy to go to atleast 1600 nice and clean.

To echo the voices of most others, good glass is the way forward, or depending on your budget. Lights. good lighting is much more important than either the body or lens.

I've just gone from a 450D to a 550D. First impressions are much better detail, much better high ISO performance and rather better auto white balance.

Personally, I like the light weight plastic bodies - I don't have wrists like a body builder.

Thanks for the info guys, my question could of been directed differently i suppose........
but it was aimed more at WHY you guys changed from the 400D and what reason.

A few seem to have gone with the 40D and 50D's which i something to keep in mind personally.
