A Windows 8.1 laptop belonging to a relative that had been upgraded to Windows 10, has just been cleaned by me. It was full of viruses, so I thought it would be best to do a full restore. I did get a message saying, your pc will restore to the original software it was shipped with. After I did the restore it did revert back to windows 8.1. So looks like I will have to install Windows 10, all over again.

I wonder if I should have removed the Windows 8.1 old folder first?

Looks like the recovery partition was still a windows 8.1 image. Once you reinstall Widows 10 you'll have to create a windows 10 recovery disk or partition

Also take a look at http://www.macrium.com/reflectfree.aspx for creating an image or clone - its free

Will have a read up on the link thanks.

When I redo the windows 10 install, I will see what is going on and where.

Yes you can see whats going on and select where you wish to install to but you should be able to upgrade to 10 within windows 8.1, your preference to which ever is easiest for you

Will make sure I keep an eye on where I am putting things, just a case of waiting for the upgrade to load up...:)

As said, if you're using the recovery partition the hardware vendor put on it then it will revert to the original software install when it came out the box.

Once you're happy I would trash the recovery partition and roll the disk space into the main. Then image the drive (windows built in is fine) for your recovery.

Will have another look at it later, not being my machine I have to make sure I get things right.

I have put Windows 10 back on, I will have a look at what you suggested. :)

Located in this area? It was a long time ago, since I messed with partitions.

Pretty sure the recovery partition you want is the one on the far right 15.76GB, simply because the others aren't really big enough.

Not being my laptop, I want to make sure I get it right.

But as you say, the15.76GB looks like the one, judging by size. :)

As you say, not your laptop, I would leave partitions as they are, 16Gb not much in the way of things!

The owner of the laptop is collecting it tomorrow, so while things are running OK, I will not bother to tinker with partitions. :)
