After months of frustration with the poor performance of my mid 2010 MacBook Pro I finally got off my arse and upgraded it. Purchased a 8 gb ram upgrade and 1tb SSD from Crucial.com both of which arrived within 2 working days and it took less than an hour to swap them over. Wish I had done it sooner

What kind of cost was involved and is the increased performance very noticeable?

Good move.
I did a similar upgrade with my 2009 Macbook Pro and the difference was like day and night.
I also removed the optical drive to insert a hard disk.
Quite pleased with the overall performance.

It cost a total of £307.00 Kevin and the increase in performance is very noticeable. I am so glad I did it.

Removing the optical drive and replacing with another SSD will be next when funds allow Saglik

Very interesting to hear that. My pro is a bit newer at 2011 and have been toying with going SSD so good to hear it makes a vast difference, cost seems reasonable too assuming it was professionally done?

Apologies, just re read your original post and see that you fitted it yourself. I'm guessing there are YouTube vidirs on how to do the job?

Yes. I did the upgrades myself by watching YouTube videos as well.

I quite agree. I have the 15" 2.8GHz 2009 MBP, 8GB RAM, a 512GB SSD, a carrier in place of the optical drive containing a 1TB 7200 rpm drive and running 10,10,5. It made all the difference.
