All, been following this forum for a few years although never posted however now I feel it's time to seek some advice first.

I'm looking at upgrading my body to a newer model but having spent a few months researching and watching YouTube videos I'm torn :/

Currently I have:

Canon 7d (mk1)
24-70 2.8 (mk1)
70-200 f4
50mm 1.8 (fantastic plastic)

Few other bits like an external flash etc...

My plan was to upgrade to a decent second hand 5d mkiii and use the existing L glass that I have because I don't feel it's giving me any benefit sat on my crop sensor, secondly since I've owned my 7d I've noticed how poor it is when you start trying to go above 1000 ISO it's fairly poor.

However would anyone recommend just upgrading to a mkiii or swapping entirely from canon to a Nikon .. maybe something like a d810? I'm not a pro or make any money just a keen hobbyist and don't need the fast(er) shutter speeds from the canon or anything in particular from one brand or the other I simply learnt from a canon user so I bought all canon.... I just talk with a few Nikon users regularly and they're trying to tempt me into a d810 over a canon?

What's anyone's thoughts it'd be much appreciated

thanks in advance.

The Canon v Nikon debate is always ongoing - everyone loves their own brand. I'm Canon and I know there are some things about Nikon that are better, but there are also some things about Canon which are better. I own Canon lenses so I'll stick with Canon. Changing to Nikon is not going to make me a better photographer.

I have the 5D3 and the 7D2 and the 5D3 is definitely superior in low light, and I think it's a superb camera (Well I would, wouldn't I? :) )

To me it would make economic sense to stick with Canon. You also already know your way around their cameras, though the 5D3 is more complicated. If you think it's really worth the change, go to a shop and try them out in your hands. Have a look at their menus and ergonomics. See which you prefer.

I'd say stick with Canon and get the 5D3. The comparative Nikons (D750 and D810) do have better sensor performance but the 5D3 is still a cracking camera and more than capable. Add to this you have Canon glass and are familiar with the Canon layout then it seems the obvious thing to do. Plus at some point you may be able to swap to a 5D4 and bridge the sensor performance gap to Nikon.

However, if you do decide to swap systems then it's not as expensive as it's made out to be, if you buy and sell wisely. I recently considered the switch from my D750 to the 5D4 (due to issues with my camera and poor Nikon service) and priced up selling my lenses and buying the equivalent used Canon ones and there was next to nothing in it.

What would be the point in swapping to Nikon? Realistically its apples for apples and you'd be throwing money in the bin, as above, stick with Canon unless the ergonomics of a particular body suit you better than the Canon 5d3.
