I've only been using dslr cameras for 8 months & now only use manual mode. I use a Nikon d3100 but want to upgrade am thinking of getting a Nikon d7100 before going to a Nikon d800 is that a good idea?

need more info - what kind of photos do you take now & that you envisage in the future?
Is this a hobby or do you see yourself making some money from your photography?

If you really can see yourself going to a D800 & could afford to go straight there it would save you money over getting a D7100 in the interim.

Yeah I'd keep the d3100 until you can afford a d800 personally, the d3100, while cheap, is still a decent body.

Photography is my hobby but if I could would love to make a career from it.
I love to try all aspects of photography & take landscape, portrait, love taking the stars in the sky & di-cast models but always love to try new things.

I've moved from these entry level DSLR's to more professional DSLR's such as the Nikon D300 which I have now. I only made the upgrade because I found it was easier to change the settings and a lot quicker which is what I needed for the type of things I shoot.

If you want my honest opinion: I don't think you will get a very noticable change in image quality when upgrading bodies. Get some decent lenses, trust me, you'll be surprised how much these can improve your photographs.

I really wouldn't upgrade bodies until you need to.

But out of everything, DO NOT buy a body knowing it's going to be temporary until you can afford something else. Believe me, I have lost £100's by doing this. And of course, you'll have to relearn how to use the camera too. I'd rather have one and stick to it and know how to use that camera to its full potential.

Hope this helps ^^,
Thanks
John.
