Hi just want a bit of advice really
I currently have a D90 but I'm looking to upgrade to a full frame nikon I was looking at the d700, does anybody have any expreance with this camera, is it a good upgrade.

I was looking at an offer that jessops have at the moment on the d700 with the nikon 24-120 for £1800 or £1760 body only, is this a good offer or is there a better offer any where else
I was also going to buy the 24-70 and an sb700 at the same time.

Another question is should I sell my d90 or should I keep it.

I'm just not sure what to do and would like some advice :help: :D

Thanks,
James

Do you NEED it now? I am asking as the gear prices are at their highest due to tsunami in Japan, and sooner or later there will be D800 when they sort out their factories.

:agree: and another thing to keep in mind is that when the replacement is out the D700 will get cheaper.

But in answer to your question its an amazing camera and it will be a VGood upgrade but you will need decent glass to get the most out of it

i agree about the timing being bad :(
on the other hand if you want it now and dont mind paying slightly more why not.(if they actualy have stock)
i upgraded from a d90 to d700 around 3 months ago and im so glad i did.
i sold my d90 just after as it felt like a toy after using the d700 for a few weeks.

The D700 is a brilliant camera with tremendous low light capability. I bought one a while ago to supplement my D300 and in hindsight I am saying to myself did I really need this and what have I gained. I'm still pondering! I do a lot of motorsport and the D700 looses out on reach. Its sensor is the same as the D300 with the same number of pixcels - 12Mp approx. merv:thinking:

Its not the same sensor Merv. Its over twice the physical size of the d300's. 12MP on a full frame sensor means much bigger light gathering capabilty, hence the D700's greeat High ISO.

Think of it as 12 million buckets. To fit 12 million buckets on the d300's sensor, they need to quite small, so each bucket only olds a tiny amount of light. The D700's sensor is over twice that of the D300's so the buckets are much bigger, meaning you can fill them up with much more light and get a better dynamic range and better low light shooting.
You may loose "reach" with the D700, but it will crop a lot more than the D300 will and retain more detail.

James R, do you have a link to the Jessops offer? I couldn't find anything on their website.

I think I might wait untill the D800 then ,I didn't even know it was announced.

It hasn't been, but even when it does finally arrive (more likely to be 2012 than 2011 now) it'll be more expensive than the D700 is now, probably over £2k for the body only

Yes the D800 will cost a lot more than the D700 is now, remember when the D700 came out. I'm surprised someone has them in stock to be honest, they are getting as rare as hens teeth here. I picked one up recently to supplement a D3 and its a whole lot of camera for the money. I also have a D300s, same sensor as the D90 and it is a big step up in low noise and IQ if you have the glass.

The D3 still wins out on speed and a few little things but you wouldn't know the difference from the images that's for sure.

I've just taken the same leap - D90 > D700.....So far, its stunning!! exactly how people describe!

I've not managed to use it much, but quickly tested it last night at high iso (circa 6400) its stunning!

As others have said, do check stock levels....last time i checked, Best Buy had the best price, but they were out of stock in store and for home delivery.....

Check here for the best prices:

http://www.camerapricebuster.co.uk/

Although, the offer you are stating probably won't show up on there...

You could be waiting a while for the replacement of the D700 to come out....

Sorry Tom I stand corrected. I suppose I meant the pixcel count is the same. Silly b----r. merv:bang::thinking:

As I was passing the Devon Camera Centre in town at the weekend, I saw that they had a D700 in stock.

Of course, you could wait for the D800 but then, the D900 speculation will start and you may want to wait for that!

I take it therefore, that if the D700 will fill the frame use it in preference over the D300 on all occasions. For instance if I need a 300 lens on the D700 or a 200mm on the D300, go for the D700 as I can up the ISO to get a suitable shutter speed to avoid handshake with the longer lens and get the benefit of the bigger sensor with all its superior qualities? Make sense? merv:bang:

You'd need a similar shutter speed for both anyway once you take account of the crop factor of the D300. But you would expect the D700 to produce a better image if the lenses were of an equal standard.

Had mine for over 2 years, and it's a great camera, but consider if you need it's capabilities. It's primary strength is in low light, and if you do a lot of low light shooting, especially handheld, then it's well worth it. If not, then you're probably better off sticking with the DX format - D300s or D7000, and saving a ton of money on new lenses.

Unless of course you can afford it and just fancy an upgrade!

That will probably be the case so I'll just get the D700

I do quite a bit of lowlight shooting, and I was fancying an upgrade aswell. :D

Just another question,
What lenses would people recommend in combination with this body,
I will have a budget of around £2000 after buying the camera and lens,
I was looking to also buy a speed light what would people recommend.
:D

A camera that good requires good glass, so the ideal is the 24(or8)-70 f/2.8 and the 70-200 f/2.8. You can swap the 70-200 for a 70-300 if price is an issue, but for general walkaround, then the 24-70 (or 8)for me is a must buy.
There is also the 24-120 f/4 which gets good reviews and might be a better walkarounfd if you dont mind loosing the f/2.8

I popped into my local Jessops this evening and they hadn't heard of this offer. Maybe only certain branches. Body only was £1850 though they did say that they currently don't have any stock in the UK and it could be two weeks until they get any more. Just to warn you.

It may be a blessing in disguise for me. Last week I started thinking about upgrading to a D90 and things have spiralled out of control up to the point that I was seriously considering the D700. If they'd had one in stock, I may have found it hard to resist.

Wait for the d800 replacement strongly hinted announcement in august and prob stocked October or November seriously not far off

Depends on your budget, the D800 will cost a lot more than the D700 is now. And as the D700 is becoming harder to source I would be surprised if its price drops upon release of the D800. I would also be surprised if the D800 is released this year, where did you hear that?

I bought the D700 with a Nikon 24-120mm F4 G ED VR lens & am very pleased with it. Just bear in mind that the 24-120 F3.5-5.6 (the one before the F4) doesn't get as good reviews. Make sure they're not offering you the older lens with the body. You say it's £1800 including the 24-120mm lens? (The F4 retails for about £850 ish new)
Theres a review here on the F4 one & plenty of other reviews out there.
The 24-70 is also, as others have said, a superb lens
