OK....

Time to upgrade my phone. The choice is down to two and I really don't care about colours....

Samsung Galaxy S5
v
HTC One (M8)

Had a S4 where the screen cracked and killed the phone... which has put me off Samsung (a bit) however the waterproofness / dustproofness I like

One - never been with HTC, the 4Mp camera puts me off (but hey I have a bag or three of kit for serious stuff) and 4Mb is fine for Facebook, but puts me off... however it seems to do clever stuff with a secondary lens...

I am not really interested in apple or anything else, and I can find plenty of reviews of one beats the other... so just asking if any owners of either, and pro's / cons of each...

Ta.

Samsung.
End of.

Sorry. ...as a fan I couldn't resist.

Samsung here too.

Not used the S4 but use the S3 and not happy with it.

I have always had htc all the way from HTC vario, htc hero and
Desire s and can say that they build quality is a lot better than the s3.

If I had a choice I would go with htc.

My partner has an S5 and the only annoying thing is the "skin" that samsung put on top of kitkat - I think I prefer the unskinned kitkat that you get on the nexus 5 - notice it also ships with an "old" version of kitkat (4.4.2)

i am worried about the build quality of Samsungs... had the s4 great phone until a small 1cm crack in the top right hand corner, but in the under layer of glass = dead screen = paperweight...

Colleague has the S5 and she loves it. It looks fantastic however plastic... whereas the HTC is mainly metal...

I am sure the inside gubbins is pretty similar....

Rather than just S or HTC, could you please elude as to why? (even if a brand whore!)

Thanks

The wife has an S3, which I really don't like, too lighweight for me, whereas I have a note 2 and the build quality is great, really solid. Had a HTC before that and their build is pretty darn fine too. Tough choice. Is it worth throwing the Sony Z2 into the mix as well?

Paul, no Xperia Z1had the self cracking screen of death.

Ihearthe Z2 is not much better!

Out of those two, HTC One M8...But if I was in the market for an Android phone my first choice would be a Google Nexus....

If you have the option I too would recommend the Nexus range. I've a Nexus 4 and its fantastic. Pure Android and always bang up to date. They also feel solid too due to the metal chassis. I'd like a Nexus 5 but can't justify leaving such a great phone as the 4 just yet. :)

I am locked into O2...so no to nexus! It IS s5 v M8

because O2 don't do it? And it isn't on the list!

Doro do phones for old gits!

Agreed with the skin kssue

A techie has removed it and it now has 43.3 on it though it arrived with 43.3 in firstvplace with the Samsung layer.

Had all models since S2 and they are very robust. Much stronger than IPhones.

Search out on You Tube. Galaxy v Iphone drop tests.

One downer

I had the use of an S4 mini...... LTE version on Three. Worsterest Narstyish Poopin mound of cRap I have ever experienced. Brought back wishful dreams of my Nokia 6310i...

To the OP. The barebones KitKat on an S4/S5 is sweet as a nut. My S5 LTE on EE IN Bristol logged into 4G is a revelation. Apparently it is npt legal to marry your phone but I have!

ok.. so google is lg... doh!

Im due an upgrade now and im going from the iphone 4s to htc one. The M8 is a little too much each month for what I want to pay.

Is the S5 less plasticy than the S4?

ok.. so google is lg... doh!
No, and yes :) That model is manufactured by LG per design of Google as the reference phone for the Android operating system. Nexus is the Google brand for reference designs and guarantees to work exactly how Android was intended, with the benefits of regular updates/patches etc. Just like other manufacturers build phones for others, LG has done it for the Nexus 5....It is a bit strange of O2 to categorise it as an LG phone as it isn't, the packaging will be that of a Google phone. But hey ho....

Whilst I don't mind the hardware by Samsung in their Galaxy range (I do think their screens are a bit over saturated and unnatural to my eyes but we all like different things), I really don't like what they do to Android. I really like vanilla Android that works really well and smooth. But if you want that, and don't want to start hacking and become a XDA member ;) the Google (LG) Nexus 5 is the only option...

But naturally it is your personal choice :)

I've just got the new Xperia Z2. wishing I went with either the S5 or HTC now though.

thanks all for your advice... went for the S5 and a 9.99 watch (from £179) - don't ask... however discount over discount... and Kelly (norwich o2#) was superb.. may have to let "my mate" Ronan (CEO o2) know!!! Just need to work out how to use the bloody thing!!!

If you had got a Dora it would have been easy.

I just upgraded my phone today.
I have had samsungs for as long as i can remember but today i made a game changing decision and went with LG G2. I know the G3 is due next month but my primary reason for the G2 was to keep the contract cost down with no upfront payments.
The G2 is still a strong phone in the current field and i am already smitten.
So glad i didnt go S5 or Note 3 which is where i was originally heading.

Im due, On iphone 5 now, Had IOS since start and tbf I love them but Im due upgrade and willing to venture away from apple. Wife had S3 while back and I didnt get on with it, Ive seen a Note 3 in action and love it. Now do I wait til Sept and see what the Note 4 and iPhone 6 have if they appear or go for the S5 now (Which by all reviews are better than current note now)
