Hi all,

I searched for a forum after seeing numerous reviews of cameras on the internet and still not being any further forward.

I currently have Pentax K-x twin lens kit. I have done a couple of groupon eveings and am starting to learn the basics of using the camera in manual.

I want to upgrade because i was looking at getting a new lens as I seem to just take pictures of nearly anything and have to end up swapping between the 2 lenses(18-55) and (50- 200) and was looking at getting a 18-250.

Doing some quick reads on here it looks like these lenses large zoom lenses dont get a good write up and has knocked me sideways.

Anyway I was looking at either the Nikon D600 or the Canon D5100 or something similar, looking about £400 - £500 price range. Also seen some people suggest maybe a 18 - 100 lenses or something like that.

I just not sure what to do

( I take shots of landscapes, buildings, animals basically everything)

Thanks

Jim

you may find an 18-250 is fine. It is always going to be more difficult to make a lens with a huge range but worth remembering that a lot of the lens obsessed people on forums whine about issues with lenses that you may not even notice in real world use.

Bit of a confusing condundrum you have there, but I think you might mean you've been considering the Nikon D5100 or Canon 600D. You probably think I'm being pedantic, so I'll also take the opportunity to advise you that there's only one E in lens.

Anyway... not sure about Canon, but Nikon do an 18-105mm cheapo zoom lens which might fit your needs, have you seen whether Pentax do something similar?

Thanks for the replies so far.

I just thought if I was going to take it further or spend more then I would be better switching to canon or Nikon, but I guess that isn't so,

Nothing wrong with a long lens. I use a 28-300 loads. You just have to remember at extremes they'll be slightly softer.

If you can get an 18-250 in pentax fit that would be the easiest solution. Sigma do one for £400. Tamron also do an 18-200 which is under £200. That might be a good every day lens if you never know what you fancy shooting.

Not sure why you'd change system because an 18-250 in any fit would be just as soft as a pentax fit one so you'd spend money to gain nothing.

The K-X is a great camera, and the two others you have mentioned are more of a move sideways than up IMHO (I moved from a K-X to D5100).
