Upgrade path decision, thinking aloud.

I like to shoot all sorts of subjects - from sport to landscape - and whilst I'm pleased with my current equipment, I would like to upgrade. The question is "what"?

Currently:

30D
EF-S 18-55 f3.5-5.6 IS
EF 50mm f1.8 II
Sigma 70-200 f2.8 EX DG HSM II

Now, the upgrade decision:

i) Simply upgrade my "weakest" lens - the 18-55 IS - probably to a Tamron 17-50 f2.8.
or
ii) Push my budget and go for a larger sensor camera now, probably a used 1D mk2.

Unfortunately, the the first option means buying a lens I won't be able to use when I eventually upgrade to a larger sensor camera (something I definitely will do). The second option means I'll have to revert to the 30D/18-55 for wider shots until I can budget a wider EF lens (possibly a 17-40 f4L) to use with the new camera.

Can someone please make my mind up for me or find a way that allows me to have my cake and eat it please? Much obliged. :D

If the body isn't restricting you, I'd wait and upgrade to the lens that you want rather than upgrading for the sake of it.

If you have money burning a hole in your pocket and must buy something replacing the kit lens would probably make the most sense. You could go for a Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 as it'll be better than the kit lens or a 17-40mm f4. Buy used and sell if/when you buy a full frame camera and it shouldn't cost you too much. Personally I'd also ditch the 50mm f1.8 and go for a Siggy 50mm f1.4 for the better bokeh and I'd possibly look at a Siggy 20mm f1.8 instead of the 17-50mm.

I`ve just gone through the same thought process as you and went out and got myself a second hand canon 1d mk2 , i`m hoping it will push my ability or lack of on a bit as there`s no auto setting and i have to think more now, hope this helps Harvey

My vote is to get the Canon 17-40 since you know you'll upgrade to a full sensor one day. It'll hold it's value and is a great lens.

If you go for the 1Dii then you will still have the same glass(if I am reading you right) in which case the 1dii will make the kit lens look pants.

Most advice will be glass then body, glass will make the images better than the kit lens and you will be happier.

Get the tamron second hand that way you will not loose that much on re sale when and if you go FF.
Me personally will be glass first body second.

I've been mulling this over whilst reading your replies and as much as I'd love a 1D2 (and Harvey, I'm sure you'll have a great time with yours), I'm now leaning heavily towards upgrading the lens first.

Tamron 17-50 or Canon 17-40? The head says "Tamron", the heart screams "L!". More mulling is in order.

Thanks for the advice.

Get the Tamron, silly buying a Full frame lens now IMO, it's not like they are hard to get hold of either.

The kit lens won't fit the 1D2, they only take EF lenses despite being a crop (albeit only a 1.3x).

I can heartily recommend the 1D2, I really like mine which I use for motorsport and airshows.
