Was looking into an upgrade for my small nikon d5000 body. After looking at the range of camera available for nikon i filter down the following.

D7000 and D300s

I don't want to go to full frame o D700, D3s and D3x is out of the door plus i can't afford for those cameras anyway.

Not sure which one will be a better upgrade.

Both are good upgrades, not a great deal to call between them, I had the same decision a couple of months ago, plumped for the D7K purely for the high iso results. I'm not dissappointed one bit, it's a tough call between them really.

go to 'advanced' and change the title to

Upgrade FROM D5000 ...may get more replies......:D

:agree:

As said, both are good cameras and both have advantages and disadvantages over the other.

What style of photography are you in to? This may help in regards to the upgrade.

Also have you tried or tested either models?

I've done the same thing recently, went for the D7000 as the specs seem slightly better in most area's. The buffer is not too good though so if burst is important to you the D300s may be better.

The other reason I chose the D7000 was that it's the one with the new technology and the D300s is relatively old kit now.

It's a close call and whichever you go for you'll be pleased.

Paul.

When I have the cash I'll be going from a D5k to a D7k. High ISO performance and newer technology are the clinchers for me.

Don't dismiss the D90 if the budget is tight ? I would love either a D90 or the D7000. The D300 feels too big to carry and might end up being left behind too often ? Although I understand in some ways it does offer more than either of the fore mentioned cameras.

I'm mainly shoot sports and walk around camera. Sometimes portrait and landscape as well. In term of bigger body and weight, it won't affect me cos I use my d5000 with battery grip and a sigma 70-200 f2.8 lens as walk around lens and i'm ok with the weight.

I'm kind of into D7000 but someone mention D90, but isn't the D7000 is a upgrade version of the D90 and D90 is a slightly better version of the D5000 .......

Officially the D7000 did not replace the D90, if money was tight the extras offered by the D7000 over the D90 might be worth sacrificing ?

Though If I had the money It would be a D7000 :-). Twin SDCard slots etc.

As Richard has already said, the D7000 wasn't officially the replacement for the D90 but in effect it has become just that now that the D90 has been discontinued.

It's somewhat eroneous to think of the D90 as a "slightly better version of the D5000" though - they're like chalk and cheese. Aside from anything else the D90 was around long before the D5000 so you'd have to say the D5K is a poor mans version of the D90 :D

I have a D90 and think it's brilliant. It handles the indoor sports and portraits that I shoot without any problem at all. The improvements offered by the D7K aren't enough to get me to upgrade but if I was looking to move on from a D5K then it's the way I would go.

I hadn't heard that the D90 is now discontinued :-( oh well. I guess the D7000 price will fall and leave the D90 in a daft nomansland land between the D5100 and D7000.

The D5000/D5100 are no match for the D90 as they lack features and the focus motor.

So you guys advice is to upgrade to D7000 if I can afford otherwise go for D90.

I know the D90 is twice as less as the D7000 in UK. Maybe i wait a while to see what the price of the D7000 will be like. I only need body only cos is not point for me to get the camera with another kit lens.

I wouldn't expect the D7000 to drop in price any time soon. Nikon aill be nowhere near recovering their investment costs for some time yet. The D90, on the other hand, is likely to come down as dealers try to get them off their shelves.

Keep your eyes open for bargains on the D7000, I got mine for £700 with 200 clicks on it, there is also one for sale in the classifieds here with only 600 ish clicks for £725

I have been watching the prices of the D90 and they are rock steady

I've almost pull the trigger on the D7000 =.= I've also heard Nikon will release D400 this year, so i not sure do i want to wait or not.

Well the D400 is part of the reason I went from the D5000 to the D7000 in February, stick with me here it made sense in my head so I'm hoping it will now :)

I had a D5k, 14 months old, I was looking at the D300 and D7k just like you. I also heard/read about the D400 being launched in autumn/winter this year. So my thinking was, get the D7k, sell the D5k for about £100 less than I bought it for, let the D400 come out in autumn at a premium price then next Feb/March the D400 will hopefully be a little bit cheaper when I will have a well looked after 12 month old D7k to sell and upgrade to the D400 where I will stay for a good few years.

It's a plan, wish me luck :D

If I'm in time...

Here's helpful Nikon upgrade path advice from Thom Hogan:

http://bythom.com/upgradepath.htm

My three-happeth of advice - don't rule out getting a low-usage second hand D300. Depending on what you'll be using the camera for there are some advantages over a D7k if you want high frame-rates and top class follow-focussing (e.g. for sports and wildlife).

Because the D300 is one model further 'out of date', buying one s/h now (as long as you get a goodun) will also minimise the loss when you move later to a 'D400'. Differences from a D300s need thought (cards, video) but they didn't outweigh the price advantages for me.

not too late. No trigger had been pull yet.

I really like the D7000 but I really like the D300s as well thats why i try ti hang fire till the D400 comes out ..... but my hand is ichying to pull the trigger on a D7000.

Not sure if i want to wait for any new camera to come out and jsut buy the D300s or D7000 =.=

i have just upgraded from d5k to d300, and it's like a totaly different game... i first had my eye on d7k, but then spent some time in local camera stores with both cameras and eventually went for d300. I didn't go for d300s as i just don't use the video on dslrs at all (and i believe that video and dula card slot are the main upgrades from d300), only tried it once with my d5k.

I bought d300 s/h and saved some pennies, so it's worth trying clasifieds here.

...and a couple of other things to consider:

Ken Rockwell's got more opinions than are really good for him, but he is right about 'digital rot' - investing in top-quality lenses is pretty safe and you'll always be able to sell them on for a reasonable return. However, digital bodies lose value rapidly (anyone buying a D-100 these days?), so if you can find a second-hand body that meets your needs then go for it because some of the depreciation has already happened.

Secondly, most of us have quite an investment in additional cards, chargers, spare batteries, grips etc and many of these are camera model-specific, so its worth thinking about how many of these are or might be usable on your planned newer model if you're going the secondhand-first route.

i didn't invest that much on a D5000 and i can still use all my lens on the new camera.

I've pull the trigger on the D7000 today, i think its a good camera for my need and it will last me a good few years before i start thinking lol.

You probably right it won't last me for too long before thinking but i think is a good upgrade to the D5k and it will last a good 2-3 years before i thinking.

Can't waste my hard earn cash lol.

Alot of my friend tell me don't upgrade to D7k and just go full frame but going to full frame will break the bank ....... body, lens and all other stuff need buying, so i staying with DX format. No plan on going to FX at this stage. The D7k will works fine for me and it will perform better than my D5k.

Wish me luck guys :)
