Hi,
I currently use the Canon 550D and looking at upgrading my general walk around lens, which is the kit lens 18-55.
Mainly it'll be for shooting travel, landscape shots. A general walk around lens.

Looking at the Tamron 17-50 2.8 non-vc as an alternative. Will I notice a big difference from the kit lens, will the image quality be better, is it a better lens?
Is there an alternative walk around lens for the same kind of price (£300ish)

Current equipment
Canon 18-55mm Kit lens
Canon 55-250mm
Canon 27mm 2.8
Canon 50mm 1.8

Thanks.

If you use wide aperture you will notice it, if you get annoyed at the aperture changing as you zoom in when at widest aperture you will notice it, if you take shots in low light where you need all the aperture help you can get you will notice it.

IQ wise you should notice it but all depends how particular you are. Do you notice any difference between your 50 and the 18-55 for IQ?

I upgraded my Nikon 18-55 kit lens to the Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 but went for the VC version. I noticed a big difference in IQ when I upgraded.

Thanks Ernesto. I do find the 50mm a stronger lens than kit. Also the situations you mention will make the upgrade worth it.

Nice one. Certainly think the upgrade is the way to go then. After looking at some threads on the board, seems like it may be worth investing in the VC version aswell. Lots of reviews say non-vc, but real world use would appear not to be much different.

I have the tamron and the imagine quality is far better, as well as having the constant 2.8 through the zoom range just makes it easier to shoot with in certain situations

I'd say it was a very worthwhile upgrade.

Thanks for the advice guys, appreciated.
Will get one soon, probably none VC unless I find the VC version at a great price.

Just to add another thought ...

The Canon 15-95IS gets a good following and you should be able to pick one up 2nd hand in your budget. It is slightly wider and longer, but it isn't a F2.8 or constant F throughout.

I had a play with the Tamron at last years Focus show (this weekend coming for this years) and was impressed with it. I've nearly bought one on a couple of occasions since ....

Cheers Andy, not looked at the 15-95 before so will check it out.
I'm going to Focus on Sunday (first time) so will see if I can get some hands on time with the Tamron. Might even pick one up if there is a good deal.

Meant to say 15-85 ...

Tamron had their own place last year and had the lenses there to look at and they were more than happy for you to try them out.

Good luck, don't spend too much :D

Tamron 17-50 is a great lens at a bargin price, I tried the VC and non VC versions and found the non VC to be by far and away the better lens.

The Tamron is a great lens for sure. You will notice the quality. It's a good price too. Worth getting, a fantastic lens :)
