Hi all, I currently have the Canon 450D standard kit lens, then 18-55 IS lens and was wondering what would be a suitable upgrade - i would prefer to buy second hand and spend no more than £200-250. Are there any lenses worth upgrading to for this money, or is it only worth going straight for an L lens?

Thanks,

Do you have any particular interest in mind? Do you want a walkabout? Something for wildlife?

There are some good lens out there, whatever you specifically want to use the lens for will guide your answers.

What kind of photography do you intend to do? ie. landscapes, wildlife etc.

Different lenses cover different genres :)

EDIT: sorry, beaten to it :bonk::bonk:

Sorry, I have a 'nifty fifty' for portraits, and a Sigma 70-300 for some wildlife, so i would really like a walkabout, with flexibility for a number of different uses. I would prefer a narrower range and greater sharpness than something longer yet poorer quality. I would only want to upgrade if it was a noticeable upgrade.

I like people as subjects if that helps.

Any walkabout I would recommend would not come within budget! I have no experience of the 3rd party lenses so I am sure someone else will come along soon with some good info:thumbs:

Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 would be my choise. Or If you could live with 24mm wide, a Sigma 24-70 f/2.8.

I have the sigma 18-50 f2.8 EX as a replacement for the kit lens
Good value 2nd hand if you can find one:thumbs:

I'm planning on upgrading the kit lens to the Tamron 17-50 f/2.8. It's not especially long, but I've got the 70-300mm for anything particularly far away, and I want something faster. There's also a Sigma 18-50 f/2.8, and a Sigma 17-70 f/2.8-4.5 that you might want to consider! There's a review of the tamron here, and I'm sure on the same site there are reviews of the other 2!

To be honest, what I REALLY want is the Canon 24-105, and 10-22 to cover the shorter end of the spectrum, but seeing as I about a grand short, that's not going to do me much good! Hope this helps a bit!

Chris

Edit: Must learn to type faster!

As has been stated...it depends how wide you feel you need to go;) If you want fairly wide the Sigma 17-70 is a very nice lens. If 24mm is wide enough then the Sigma 24-70 really dose take some beating for the money.

Thanks.

I was wondering. I know Nikon have VR and Canon go for IS, why do no third party lenses go in for image stabilisation?

Also, do you think the Sigma 24-70 f/2.8 will represent a noticeable upgrade on the kit lens, or will the difference be marginal?
