I am looking to upgrade my camera, I currently have a 40D

My budget is sub £500, as such I wonder if the 60D trade up is the way to go.

I appreciate any advice, more than likely broached previously somewhere

Scott

Have you held a 60D?

I had a 40D and didn't like the handling of the 60D at all, felt very different and ended up buying a 7D

Never that impressed with the pictures from the 18mp sensor and gone back to using an old 5D. I mainly take landscapes and buildings so didn't need the fast focus and fps.

Would recommend you pick one up to try before you buy

Cheers

I think a 7D might be a bit out of my price range :-(

Really? The price of the 7D has really come down as of late!

What to the sub £500 range surely not ?
I must admit I haven't scrolled the classifieds just presumed they were simply too expensive

The standout feature of the 60D over the 40D (to me) is the beautiful LCD screen and the high ISO option. That said, I didn't like the 18MP sensor either and also kept to full frame (and cropped instead for wildlife etc.), which is much nicer at pixel level.

Of course, if you want video then the 60D has that too.

Sold mine for £570 and they are definitely sub 600 quid now, it would also save you getting new memory cards

got to be honest I have the 60D and love it, interesting to see people not impressed with the images from the 7d , 60d sensor etc, they can produce superb images especially with some processing

I agree they can, but do require a fair bit of work and need to take extra care not to underexpose. Have seen some very noisy examples at low iso's from the 7D, must say mine was ok in that respect though.

Liking the photos from my old 5D much more and the RAW files don't require anywhere near as much sharpening, detail and foilage looks more natural too.

So 2 choices 2nd hand 7D or spanking 60D

Decisions, decisions

Or third choice - keep the 40D. What are the main reasons for needing the upgrade?

Yes and save up some more - then look at the 70D when it's released to see what enhancements they've introduced, you might be able to afford a new 7D by then ?

I looked at the 60D when it was released and didn't like how it had gone away from the 40/50D build, the pop out screen wasn't of interest, so I didn't go any further with buying one

Reason for the change is simply looking at a more modern unit

I did also like the idea of HD video on it

It's internet b011ox talk though:nuts:. The Canon sensors are now behind the sensors of equivalent Nikon's. But what does it matter? In actual real life to a real photographer?

9/10 of 4/5 of F all.

No one is going to go out with their Canon, shoot a picture, and then get a Moink out and shoot with that too, then go home, examine them at 200% and cry into their beer because they want the Canon one to be as good as the Noink.

They'll go out and shoot some pictures, and if they're average photographers, they'll be fairly pleased with the results:shrug:. They'll pick a hundred holes in their own technique:'(, and then maybe see a bit more noise than they'd like in the dark areas:(

Actually I genuinely disliked the noise pattern of 60d images, at high iso, on real shoots. Images appeared softer to me than those shot with earlier Canon models too, which meant more sharpening was necessary. This made the noise look even worse. So, no, I didn't like the sensor. Nice body though, and fab screen.

Yes the video is a function the 40D doesn't have...

Best advice would be to go and try the 60D out yourself and see how it feels to you

Keep the 40d, i have two bodys ad their brilliant, if i was going to upgrade it would be to a 1d mk3 or a 5d mk2 and then l series lens!

Save up more cash and get full frame to get the real benefits

i fully agree with you Phil. I absolutely love my 60D and the images it produces, so do the people I sell my images to, which is why I find it interesting that some think they are so bad, especially as I am more than happy to shoot at 3200 and have a play if I need too.

IMVHO it's not that they're so bad or that you can't get good results from them it's that if you're setting out to buy a camera today Canon APS-C cameras are now (arguably but very probably) behind what it's possible to get IQ and latitude wise when you're pushing what's possible and looking for the differences.

But if you're already a happy Canon APSC user with a bag full of lenses and flash equipment, it'd be madness to swap systems or even go full frame. So; given that the cameras do actually function as per their design (they take pictures, the quality of which is largely dependant on the skill of the operator), why do people feel the need to keep painting them as useless?

I would say I wished the sensors were better, but given that I'm a while away from buying a new camera, I really don't care that much. And honestly, when I am ready to buy, the best Canon APSC for me will be the right camera, as a switch of system or format would cost too much money:).

Thanks for all the helpful replies.

I think maybe a rethink is in order. My 40D works extremely well. So after all my deliberating I may end up keeping it.
But then again tomorrow is another day!!
