Hi all

At the moment I have a Canon 400D, which was bought as a twin lens package. So as well as the camera I have the standard 18-55mm kit lens, 55-200mm usm zoom lens, BG-E3 battery grip, battery charger, plus some extras.

As I have caught the photography bug I am wanting to upgrade.

Can anyone offer any advice on the best option out of the below please?

Either: sell the two lenses I received with the 400D & buy the newer 18-55mm IS lens & the 55-250mm IS Zoom lens or the Sigma 70-300mm APO DG lens?

or: Sell the 400D, the 2 lenses & the battery grip & buy a 450D with the 18-55mm IS lens?

or: Sell the lot and buy a Canon 40D with the 17-85mm IS lens this week while the cashback offer is still on?

I know there are alot of posts asking for advice on a new camera upgrades, but any advice is much appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Sell the 400d with the kit lens and the battery grip
Buy the 40d with 17-85 much better than any other 'kit' lens

It really depends on the sort of photography you do and what you expect from the upgrade.

The 400D is capable of producing cracking images. I don't think an upgrade to the 450 will benefit you much. As always the quality of the glass is more important.

Will you miss your 55-250 if you get rid of it? What do you feel is holding you back with your current equipment?

Maybe there are other glass options if you explain the sort of photography that has bitten you!

I unfortunately cannot comment sensibly on U.K. prices but I would advise you to stay FAR away from the 17-85 lens...

If you plan to do ANY people photography this is not the lens to go for 8.8 out of 10 times.

It distorts horribly at both the short and long end.

Tell us more about the photography you currently enjoy and/or are likely to take up...

i'd be inclined to buy some glass first rather than upgrading the body.....

If I bought a 40D I with the 17-85mm lens I would be looking to add the 70-300mm IS USM lens at a later date

I'd (save and) go for the 70-200 f/4 (that was my first L lens) over a 70-300. just my opinion, I think they are about 400 according to campricebuster. although I'd be tempted to drop kerso a note, he has good prices.
