Hi everyone,

I would really appreciate your expert advice please....

I currently have a Nikon D3000 and have been using this for 5 years. I am now keen to upgrade my camera. I have completed GCSE photography last year & want to continue my love of photography & shooting mainly portrait shots for family & friends. I have no other kit - other than the d3000 & its 18-55mm kit lens. Therefore if anyone could advise me on which camera to upgrade to - as well as lenses, filters etc that would be fantastic.

Thank you

Budget?

There are loads of cameras and lenses you could choose, it's impossible to suggest what you need to upgrade to without more information......

What is it you want to do that your current equipment can't do? What subjects are you interested in?

ive been recommended the d90 as a next step up from d3000. dont want to be too out of my depth but feel ready for a more 'grown up' camera after having learnt so much from my course. as i say its mainly portraits that i am interested in - i have a young family so day to day life will be my main subject of interest. a 50mm along with the d90 perhaps has been also suggested?

Depends on what you want to spend for around the same money as a D90 you could get a D300 much better a.f, pro build etc. Or for not much more a D7000.

Perhaps look at upgrading your lens first and see how you feel with the quality then. d3000, d300 and d90 image sensors will be comparable IQ wise. You're paying extra for build quality and performance.

Whats the budget?

Uncke Ken rates the D3000 as the worst canera Nikon have ever made.

I recently went from the D3100 to a D7000 (although I had invested in glass beforehand) and love the extra functions/buttons that come with a more "grown up" body.

budget wise i will pay to get the right step up. i want a new camera as feeling limited by the d3000 and issues with auto focus with some lenses with d3000.

The D3000 uses the same 11 point AF system as the D90 so you might want to give the D90 a miss. Ignoring that then the D90 would be a good move and if you're looking to buy brand new you can probably get one for around £400 or maybe just under. It's a great cam to learn from and has all the handy function buttons on the body which saves fishing through menus.

Have you thought about going ff like a d600, before you start investing in lenses

I would also recommend D90 for the upgrade as well. I assure you that quality photos will be obtained.

Uncle Ken also says he prefers to use his iphone 5 over his D800 as it produces better colours:lol:

Indeed. I'd take camera advice from Uncle Ben before Uncle Ken.

Uncle Ken is (as always) full of crap.

Depending on budget, my choice would be a D300 (if staying Dx for a while) or a D600 (I FF is the chosen path. Of course, since there aren't a load of Dx lenses to upgrade as well, a system switch can't be ruled out, with the 5 or 6D from Canon being the obvious contenders in the FF stakes, not sure of their crop bodies.
