Just received my Kenko 1.4 today and tried it with the Sigma 70-300 APO which is 5.6 at the 300mm end.

After taping the 3 pins it auto focused immediately (there was plenty of light though) and the pictures are not half bad.

All pictures straight from the camera. Just resized, no sharpening or editing of any kind.

They've come out really well. A good test of lens and teleconverter.
Thanks for sharing.

The taping pins trick seems to be camera dependent.

It doesn't work with my 40D, 100-400L and taped Kenko Pro 1.4x at 400mm, effective aperture f/8. It hunts and shunts, the IS gets all twitchy, and it lands sharp focus maybe 20% of the time. And that is after quite a lot of hunting. Other times it will give up, and just sits there, out of focus, with the AF light blinking. Hopeless.

But when I try the same set of various targets with my 350D (cheap and old camera, relatively speaking) it usually nails it. It sometimes struggles a bit, but scores a hit rate of 80% or more. That is worthwhile.

I have heard that 20D and 30D are also okay, but also that others have had trouble with the 40D.

I took another couple of photos today and I am very satisfied with the results.
Please let me know if these are acceptable or if I am just not picky enough.

These were taken in cloudy weather, handheld.

Tamron on the 1000D at 300mm x 1.4 = 420mm (672mm effective taking into consideration the 1.6 sensor ratio).

Used the auto mode JPEGS. Most probably can achieve better results with RAW and manual but did not have the time as it started raining just after I took these!

Untouched full picture (only lowered resolution for web upload).

I've not had any experience with teleconvertors. Will they autofocus on non hsm/usm lenses? I've a D200 and 170-500mm.

So they have a screw type thing that goes through the teleconvertor? Excuse my lack of technical phrases :D

I have tested the Kenko 1.4 & found they add nothing to zoom lenses that a crop won't give. I found that they work quite well on prime lenses under certain circimstances. It would be interesting to see a photo of the aerial on full zoom without the converter and then cropped, then the same aerial with the converter on with the picture cropped so both aerials appear the same size. That was how I tested my Kenko 1.4 & also canon converters.

Yes, that will work - no need to tape any pins like the Canon folks need to do
