I'll be honest, I'd choose a laptop with an SSD and use a USB3 external drive over a 5400rpm mechanical drive any day. They just make such a huge difference to general system responsiveness. I've not used one, but i suspect even the 'hybrid' SSHD's that are around would be almost as good.
My Laptop has a 128gb drive. It's fine for almost anything, I have a portable USB3 HDD for my bulk storage.
