Up to £1k on lenses what would be the best mix for what I have

Have had a couple of thread relating to different lens options but I thought just put what I have here and what I want and hopefully the advice from you guys will keep me happy for a while!!!!

I have the D300 now and obviously would like some faster glass.

My current 'keepers' are the Sigma 10-20 and the nifty fifty.

The potential sale is the Sigma 17-70 2.8-4.5 and the 'I'm not sure although will probably keep' is the Sigma 120-400 and the 18-200 just cos it is a handy walkabout!!!!

So with the funds above my initial thinking was possiblt the Tamron 28-75 f2.8 and the Tamron 70-200 f2.8 which comes in around £700 for both new (or cheaper if found s/h?)

What do you guys think, should I keep anything I am thinking of selling or if not what to buy instead?

Interests if it helps are landscapes, wildlife and a bit of sport (usually footie outside in reasonable light)

Well I've bitten the bullet and ordered the Tamron 28-75 to replace my Sigma 17-70 (now F/S on the classifieds ;) )

Now big question what to spend the cash on for the mid-long range???? Advice welcome
 
Mid long? Well the 70-300 VR is good.

55-200 VR is good.

If you do want f/2.8, the Tamron 70-200 is excellent optically, but it does have very slow focusing. Think slow then re-think it as s---l---o---w. If you set your expectations for great optics, but with mice on strike driving the gearing you'll be fine.

Don't mention the 70-300 :razz: I miss that lens!!!

I am getting the feeling I might be disappointed with the Tamron then, especially as some of the time I would be using it for footie games and can see the AF slowness being a real issue there?

So what's the next best option (ie the next most expensive I guess?) I can probably stretch the budget a tad as I have sold a lot more than I have bought recently so feel free to suggest another option (also am in the US next week so even with the crappy $/£ at the moment I may still be able to get a bargain if I can order something up tomorrow.
 
I already have the 120-400 and although it is not great in low loght it will do the job for any normal tele stuff I do. I also have the 50mm prime and have just sold the 24mm I had as it never got any use!!!
 
Hmmm, seeing some good reviews of the Nikon 80-200mm F2.8D IF-ED, anyone own one or had one that could recommend its performance? I know it is not an AF-S lens and seems like it could be a bit noisy but any other down sides for a lens that is half the price of the 70-200?

I had it for just over a week before I got 70-200mm VR. Its very sharp Lens and can be had for about £400-500. I only sold it on as I got my 70-200mm for a bargain £600 :thumbs:

Yeah.. I remember that.

BTW I picked up a 28-300 VC and it was excellent, quite sharp too be honest.

I sold it as I've just picked up a 70-200 VR + 1.7x and needed to pay for it- but I showed 100% crops in the add here and the buyer is very chuffed with it too :)

If you get a good one, I think it would replace your 120-400 and 18-200 VR?

Not recommending this per se.. but this post reminded me...

I had started thinking about that again TBH, but I might go and splash some cash on the 70-200 or if I can't get a good deal I may just keepo the funds back until something really jumps out at me
