Unusual Photoshop CC behaviour

I've recently had a hard drive failure which led to me having to do a clean install of windows, and since I've reinstalled Photoshop I've noticed a few irritating problems which I'm not sure how to fix. The first is that when saving files as jpeg, the default quality setting is 8 rather than 12. When I had used PS previously it always used to be whatever the last setting I used was (which was always 12). Now I find if I don't notice it straight away I can edit a batch of images and save them at the wrong size, which means doing them all again (annoying!) Is there a way to stop this from happening? I've tried google but can't find anything that relates to this (most "solutions" say that it should be whatever setting you last used, but this is not the case for me).

The other issue is when saving presets in Camera Raw. When opening the location to save them in, rather than going straight to the correct location where the rest of my presets are saved, it defaults to my pictures folder and I have to then try to find the correct location (users>app data>roaming etc etc), which again is a PITA. How do I change the default path so it always opens in the right location?

If anyone can help with this it would be much appreciated as it's driving me nuts!

Thanks in advance :)

Right I've just done a fair bit of testing and I think I've figured it out.

JPG Quality
I converted a RAW file into jpeg with maximum quality in Nikon ViewNX2 and opened it in Photoshop (CC). Tried save as and it defaulted to 8 as you said. I saved it at 12 instead. I re-opened this saved jpeg and did save as, but this time it defaulted to 12! I opened another random jpeg off the internet and did save as and it defaulted to 12. Tried again and again it defaulted to 12. Next, I did the same thing, saving from RAW as max quality but then opening in PS, saving as jpg and choosing quality 5. I closed the file, re-opened the originally converted jpg and did save as and it defaulted to 5! Another random website image and again defaulted to 5! So it seems to me that once you save a file as 12, future images will default to save as 12. Does that help?

File Location
With this, I couldn't emulate the problem so the quickest fix I can think of is: if you use Windows, along the left hand side there should be the list of folders. There's a section at the top 'favourites'...just drag the users>app data>roaming etc etc folder onto the favourites folder and it will appear there. Now when it defaults to your pictures folder, at least it only takes 1 click to get to the correct folder. Not a true fix but a lot better than what you're currently having to do!

HTH!

Hi Chris,

Thanks for taking the time to look into this for me :)

What you experienced regarding the JPG quality is (I think) how it should behave, and is how photoshop used to behave for me, but unfortunately now despite always saving to 12, it for some bizarre reason always reverts back to 8 so I have to be careful the first time I use it again to make sure I change it back to 12. It stays at 12 until i end that session, then when I start a new one reverts back to 8 again. Very odd!

That's a great suggestion regarding the file location though, I'll definitely do that as it'll make it much easier!

Thanks again for your help :)

No problem!

I can only think of way of fixing the quality problem:

Create/Run An Action
Not sure if you know about actions or how to use them, but firstly, open an image. Now create a new action and then do save as > choose destination folder and select jpg as the file type > choose quality 12 and save. Now stop the action recording. You can now press the play button to run this action on any file you open. The only trouble with this is that it will save in the same folder every time, but you can always have a specific folder that they save to before moving them out.

Batch processing
If you have lots of files and you want to apply that action to them all at once, firstly open all the images you want to change (or put them all in 1 folder) and then you can go File > Automate > Batch. From the 'Action' dropdown choose the one you just created (such as Action 1). Source: Opened Files/Folder where they are saved. Destination: Folder (then Choose which folder). Tick the "Override Action 'Save As' Commands" and click OK.

Again not a solution but could help!

TBH I'm kind of in the habit of checking now each time I begin a session so it's probably not worth going down the action route (it's more of a minor annoyance than a problem I really need to fix), but again thanks for taking the trouble to help :)

No problem. It only takes 10 seconds to create and action and then 1 second to run it though (that includes saving the file, closing it and moving onto the next file if you want!). Can't beat actions for productivity! :)
