Glimpsed the bbc on in the canteen this morning as I grabbed a bacon butty. They were interviewing the Team GB gold medal winning tae kwon do girl.
Couldnt believe it when one of them asked her: "So, when did you realise you had a talent for kicking people in the head?"

Sums up the idea of women 'fighters' though ... undignified :whistling:

I might have suggested that your attitude is a couple of generations out of date; but then again I wouldn't dare say that (they're OOD) to the ladies of the SOE whom I've been privileged to meet - they're far too dangerous! :)

Aye lad, out of date I maybe but I like my women without crooked noses :D

Nothing undignified about female sports. Maybe when gas was your only form of lighting i would of agreed times change and move on and good on the girls for doing what they are good at.

Of course not, but 'fighting' sports are quite different IMO.

I dont see how. They do it within the rules of the sport. its based on a point system. its not a street brawl.

Not so long ago women were only allowed to ride side sadle anything else was frowned upon. Dont think we would be picking up many golds in show jumping then :D

i think gramps might have a point. we dont want anything to risk our womens pretty little faces but we cant stop at "fighting" sports, i mean i broke my nose playing basketball so thats out too, the missus has broken her jaw riding a horse so thats out. the GB girl playing hockey the other day broke her jaw too so that has to go.

hell best ban all sports for women. THINK OF YOUR LOOKS WOMEN!

jeez.

Is jelly wrestling a sport:thinking:

Any sport has an element of risk of injury, that is quite different to a 'sport' which has by design an aim to injure.

Women have been fighting, getting injured, and injuring others for millennia.

Either grow up or change your name to Alf Garnet.

I'll always remember when I phoned my parents from University and said that I had followed in my Dad's footsteps and taken up rugby

My Mum asked why I had to play rugby and why couldn't I carry on with my hockey or start netball

I had seen more broken noses and cracked cheekbones in the netball girls and more damaged knees and shins in the hockey girls than injuries I had seen in any rugby girls :D

Plus the rugby girls knew how to have proper beer circles with pints, not the alcopop rubbish that the netball "Barbie" girls tended to play their drinking games with :D:D

The aim of fighting / marital arts sports in competition is not to injure your opponent though :).

Good on ya

Isn't it? I thought the aim of boxing was a K.O.

Someone in the Olympics thread was also saying about how they don't agree with female boxing. It's a shame the way some people have such outdated views. Move with the times, if women want to box, do judo, taekwondo or any other fighting sports why should they be judged/frowned upon?

t's a shame the way some people have such outdated views. Move with the times

Not everything gets better with the passing of time and views are not 'outdated' just because they are different. All sorts of things have changed overtime but not all changes have been for the good.

Well the gold medal lass this morning didnt have a broken nose, she was in fact a bit of a stunner.

But I'm not talking about 'other things' I'm talking about women competing at the highest level of a physical contact sport and people thinking there is something fundamentally 'wrong' with it. That is an outdated view and one the exemplifies the inequality that exists.

No the aim of boxing is to win. If it happens via a KO so be it but you dont aim for the KO if you did you wont last very long in the ring

What do you do to win?

So how do you score points?

No one is forcing girls to take up violent sports, they do it of their free will, so I can't personally see what the issue is.

Granted I would rather go watch a women's beach volleyball match, than a women's rugby match, but I have respect for any girl that wants to play rugby (etc).

My point is that it is a 'violent' sport by nature and that is what makes it different from other sports which, though possibly having a risk of accidental injury, is not essentially based on violence.
