Just logged onto my flickr and one of my photos has had about 230 views in one day which normally it would only get 25 - 30 views. Is there anyway I can see where these people are visting this photo from? The stats on Flickr say referal unknown.

I suppose this is the trouble with Flickr, I dont by all means think I am a pro but if somebody wants to use my photo they should at least ask, also if I upload I will loose all the comments etc on my photo which would be a shame.

Is there anyway to prevent people 'hotlinking' your shots?

You could watermark them, then at least if they are hotlinked there's no question who is responsible for the photo.

Although that doesn't stop anyone cropping it out and re-hosting it.

Not necessarily. You can replace the photo with a new one. I think that retains your history. Replace link is on the bottom right of the page

By the looks of it Turnip does have a pro account. OP - if you look at the photo stats you should get a graph? Then if you click on the "point" that has the high viewings, click on All Referrers, click on the one with the high viewings, it should still allow you to work your way into the source of the "hotlink".

Never spotted that before! Does that give it a different URL then? Otherwise the hotlinking problem still remains.

yes it does - I had a shot of mine hotlinked by a french web-shopping site so I swapped the image for one with a watermark saying "stolen from..." thinking that they'd still link but at least it'd look bad for them. The simple act of swapping the file gave a new url, and broke their link. I guess when they came looking for the new image, they got a watermarked image and went away to nick someone elses work!

Yeah tried looking at the stats and it states the referral is 'Unknown Source', I have even tried googling it but no joy. It maybe just innocent but I would like to know where my photos are.

I may give it ago by adding a watermark and updating the shot, did'nt know your could replace shot.

Anybody got any tips on how to add a decent watermark?

Ah, yes. There's details about it on the Flickr help page:

Can I replace my photos and keep the comments and tags and stuff?

Yes! If you have a pro account, you can replace a single photo at a time. On the individual photo page, click the "Replace this photo" link below the Additional Information heading on the right side. The title, description, comments, notes, tags, groups and favorites associated with the original photo will be kept.

As of April 20, 2007, replacing an image will change the image file name. Please note that this will "break" any photo that has been blogged elsewhere as the image file will have a new URL.

Sorry, that was a reply to BigYin.

Referral Unknown means a direct link to the image's page. So probably you've posted an image here which links back to the Flickr page.

I've had the occasional entry showing unknown source on the referals - the only one I managed to pin down was a photo i'd only made available to family/friends, and emailed a link to one of my mates. He then forwarded it to half a dozen people as an embedded image in an email, and every time someone opened the email I got another unknown referal!

Didnt know that either, but normally when I put a photo on here or other forums it will show up as TalkPhotography on the referrals. Also the photo in question I have not uploaded onto any forums or blogs. Tried TinEye just now and I says its only on Flickr at the moment.

You could use Flickr's built in editor ( Piknik ) to put a watermark on it, doesn't change the URL either, but means anyone viewing the photo will see the new one ( with the watermark! )

sounds like someone's sending the direct link to the jpg over IM/email.

it seems that my original photo is being displayed on a blogging community on tumblr.com, people keep reblogging it and it seems that this could be the cause maybe. However since changing the photo with a watermark, it has not changed at there end and is still showing the photo without the watermark and is still linking to my photo (which is the new one) grrrrr!!!

time to change it temporarily to soomething less savoury...:naughty:

or just "Image Stolen from...."

It might just take a little while for Flickr to update and remove the old photo. Otherwise that's bloody annoying. It means they delete any link to the photo via your photostream, but leave it active on their server. Nah, that can't be right, surely.

i've linked photo's on here, the re-upped an updated file and by the time i've come back in here, the link has broken... I suppose that the image could be in the tumblr.com cache files ??

I am a bit confused with that too. When replacing the photo on Flickr the address seems to stay the same which is what the blog website it directing to hence they can still link to it even though the actual filename of the photo may have changed.

Like you say it may take time but it is anoying as the photo at their end has remained unchanged.

I have got a feeling that is what is going on but maybe this cache does get updated every so often.

What really gets me is that I may not mind people using it but I just wish they just asked!!!

It could be that it's being pulled out into an application that someone has built using the flickr api, which is fine. Also, I think views only register when a person actually goes to the flickr photo page. So if they are linking the image then they are doing it within the Flickr guidelines. I'd take it as a compliment.

On the 23rd Nov my views went upto 700 from around 230, the norm, then later that day, they went down to 6, after flickr said there had been an error with its logging of views.

have you tried refreshing your browser  also Several of mine have ended up on Tumblr blogs but tbh I can't see the problem as they always credit me with pics and link back to Flickr  If you have changed the image then the url must have changed too

Just done a search and a few of my images are on there too. I'm not too fussed as they link back to me and credit me, what is the point of tumbir?? I'm not sure I get it at all...lol

I've got a strange one too... uploaded a night shot of the manchester wheel which has had 1,354 views since I uploaded it on the 7th.. only reference back is to flickr.. its not showing as on explore with scout so am stumped!.. no comments just views!

It amy simply be that your photo is now on a search engine. Check the stats page to see where the majority of your visits are coming from. If it is a search engine then that may be the reason. Yahoo.co.uk uses flickr for searches of images.
