Unusual Decision... Camera Time... (Again.)

Right, long story short...

I had a D7100, upgraded to a D800, D7100 is to be sold in the next few days, D800 has now got an issue and is going back for a full refund.

Now... In recent weeks with the announcement of the D810, the D800 now seems to be discontinued, (as does the D800E.)

The D800 is not a PERFECT camera for me, but I do really like it, it was more or less perfect for what I want. I do motorsports photography at smaller circuits (200mm on FF is sufficient) which is full event coverage (so including things like pits etc.) The new rumours from Nikon regarding their new FF 'sports' camera sounds PERFECT for what I want. Now, since I'm going to be buying another camera but I'lll probably be selling it when/if the new one comes out, (if it ever does actually happen.) Basically I want to buy a camera, with the intention of losing out on as little money as possible over the next few months when it comes to selling.

What would you do in this scenario? I tried looking on MPB for a D800, but since I can get a grey import D800E BRAND NEW from Panamoz for pretty much the same price as their used D800's it seems like a no-brainer to do that.
 
D600? Under priced as it was so quickly replaced by the D610 due its manufacturing problem that Nikon will now fix
 
Manufacturing problem being the dust/sensor issue I assume? I have to admit that's what always scared me about them. When you say they'll fix it, would you be buying used or new? Do you also have any idea whether the D800's AF system is a much bigger improvement? The reason I ask is that the D800 and D7100 shared the AF which I'm now accustomed to.

D600 has 39/9 focus point instead of the 51/15 of the D800-D7100.

other down side of D600 is 4fps.

D600 second hand sub £800. so financially D7100 iis more to your requirements I think, I didn't know DX was on your radar
 
You will get more satisfaction and fun by spending money on lens and less on a body ………… but maybe you can afford both

(I would prefer to continue with my D300/D7100/D700 and buy the new Nikon 80 400mm or whatever I need rather than upgrade to a D800/D810)

Thanks for clarifying! I do love the AF system on the D800/D7100. I think there's more chance of me buying a D800/D800E and cutting my losses with trying to sell a 6 month old body and taking a bit of a loss than having a worse AF system and possibly have to send the D600 off for a sensor replacement etc.

I have had a D7100, and I wouldn't really want to go back to DX if I can avoid doing so.

I hear you there, I just feel that the quality/DOF on the FF was so much nicer, the D800 just felt really nice to me and I adapted to it really quickly.

I have a Nikon 70-200 2.8 VRII to go with it, which is the perfect tool for what I need. Appreciate your advice though.

I think deep down I'm trying to justify buying another D800. If I was to get one from Digitalrev it'll be £1529, how much should I realistically expect to lose if I was to sell this say 6 months down the line? Baring in mind it's a grey import, but I'd hope it'll be perfect otherwise.

I would think that in the future the D800E will be more sort after than the D800

If you are thinking about selling it in 6 months time, presumably to buy a D810 ……… buy the D810 now as I would budget for a drop of up to £500 on a grey import ……… quite a few D800 were sold ……. and a lot of guys (seem) not to put many clicks on them ………..
 
What is your budget?
Is the D4s out of your reach? Expensive I know, but it would save you chopping and changing in the future. It's a top drawer sports camera.

Thanks Dean, the one I am currently returning is going back to HDEW, I've had no luck with the two I've had from them, and their policy states that they'll only replace a camera once, then they offer a full refund. I got it whilst it was in their sale at £1545, but it is still a decent price so I am considering that. How do DigitalRev compare? It's £1529 there at the moment. Panamoz have it for a whopping £1377 with BACS but due to it being discontinued it doesn't sound like they're going to be getting any more stock sadly.

I could be tempted to get a used D800 if it came with a decent warranty etc, I wouldn't feel overly confident buying one from a used seller without warranty really.

I'm finding it hard to see the point of the D800E, but the fact that it's a more expensive camera leads me to think it SHOULD hold it's value better at least.

I won't be buying a D810 in 6 months time to be honest, I'll probably either stick with the D800 or get this new 'sports' camera that's currently being rumoured.

Afraid so, I'd rather not spend more than £2k at the moment, the field which I'm working in really doesn't bring in much money and I'd rather stick with the D800 at less than half the price to be honest. Appreciate the feedback though, it sounds like an amazing camera for sure.
 
never used Digitial rev but from a recent forum post when things go wrong it can be a total headache. especially where warranties are concerned. im sure plenty of people have no complaints with them but google search shows plenty of very unhappy customers too.
