unsure which lens to buy? HELP

Im looking to buy a new lens this year and was considering the EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM, Im looking for an almost general lens to reduce the need to carry a couple in my bag. The issue I have is I like to take a wide variety of pictures. (I have a canon 60d).

Any advice would be great.
 
I've used the 24-105L and although it is a very good lens, from my experience and from what I've read, it does not always seem to shine on a crop frame. Also, the focal length works out less than ideal, 38 is bit too long for true wide angle, and 168 often seems a bit short for tele. I know some people make it work on a crop, but you might end up less than impressed. I know I was.
 
Have you had a look at the canon 17-55mm, excellent lens as a walk about
 
For max versatility on a cropper, look at 17-55 if f/2.8 appeals, or 15-85 for a bit more focal length range. Both excellent.

Main problem with 24-105 is it's not wide enough for a lot of things on crop format cameras.

Just to repeat what others have said if you want versatility look for something that goes a little wide 24mm on a crop isn't very wide. 16-85 is great general use lens. If you want some more zoom you could look at the super zooms like the 18-200mm or 18-250mm.
 
I must be in the opposite camp. I got a 24-105 f4L with a 5D2 and the lens got more use on my 7D than it did on my 5D2. It's a great walkabout lens for a crop, unless you want wide shots which I didn't. I sold the 5D2 after a few months to get a 5D3 but I kept the lens. It doesn't get too much use these days as I've got 24-70 and 70-200 in f2.8 now but I still don't want to sell it as it's so versatile.

Im still unsure what to get? I already have an 18-55mm and a 55-200mm these are both kit lenses. by the way I couldnt find the 16-85mm anywhere, I assume it was a 15-85mm??

I think the 16-85 might have been replaced by the 15-85.

Canon makes a 17-85 and a 15-85 (my mistake in post above, I'll correct it). The latter is a much better lens, and that extra 2mm at the shorter end makes more difference than you might think.
 
I am liking the look of the 15-85mm, I was looking at spending upto £2000 but at around £450 seems like a bargain.
 
The 24-105 is a cracking lens on a FF camera, if your looking for a red ring as a walk about lens on a crop body, I would suggest the Canon 17-40mm f/4 L.
 
I was looking to buy the 24-105 for my 60d but was put off by people saying it wasn't the best match for a crop body! So I bought a 15-85 which is amazing!!
