'Unsupported file'

Probably 'old hat' to many out there and there are probably other ways to do it but I thought this might help somebody somewhere.
When a JPEG image, having been opened and processed in GIMP, is exported back to its original folder it becomes an 'unsupported file' in Nikon View NX2, process it as a single image in Photomatix Essentials and the file 'works' again.
 
Have you checked the file extension? I've seen it a few time when it'sjust lost the .jpg bit off the end. Add .jpg back in and all's well.

The file name remains exactly the same, I tried many ways until I found a way that worked (for me).
The images always open perfectly well in Windows Photo Gallery and elsewhere but not in View NX.
It's probably my lack of computing skills and level of hardware/software, I know.
