Unsharp Mask - Now isn't that a deceiving term for a newbie who wants to sharpen their photograph. Unsharp Mask brings to mind...well...a mask that isn't very sharp and therefore not suitable for Halloween wear. Unsharp Mask doesn't fill ya with confidence when you want to sharpen your photo. Just shake the camera a bit during the exposure to get that unsharp look... It's the in look. :bonk:
Adobe & co - At least call it Sharp Mask... :shake:
 
It's a term left over from film days when a slightly out of focus version was combined with a normal version to make an image "look" sharper.
Why they carried the term over to digital I have no idea, probably couldn't think of anything else.
