Quick question - is there now a way of unlocking an iPhone that is on EE that's purchased on, say eBay? I'm urgently looking for one as mine has smashed so need a replacement until it's repairs. I do recall reading something saying that now they can be, as originally you never could?

I think you have to contact Apple. It is a few years since I had an EE iphone 4 unlocked, but pretty sure that was how it had to be done.

I see, okay - on the Samuel topic, is Vodafone a similar story to unlock?

O2 phones are generally unlocked as standard. They were advising that the latest iPhone would remain locked for the first 6 months of the contract to ensure people weren't opting for it just to sell.

My wife has just put her ee sim into her old O2 Samsung and it worked just fine.

EE will only unlock for the account holder, sometimes by using the phone with a PAYG sim for more than 6 months gets around that (but not always).

It's better to not buy an EE locked phone unless you want to use it on EE.

Info is at http://ee.co.uk/help/getting-started/joining-ee/unlocking-your-phone

This isn't correct, O2 phones are locked, they will unlock on request, but only for the account holder, some phones won't be unlocked until they have been on the market for a set period (for example the iPhone 6/6+ where they will not accept unlocking requests until they decide sufficient time has elapsed since launch, usually around 6 months).

Perhaps your wife's Samsung was sourced from an independent retailer who sell/sold O2 like CPW, P4U, mobiles.co.uk etc who supply unlocked stock?

We won't be unlocking iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus for a while. We're prioritising our stock of these devices for customers who want to use them on the O2 network. The exception to this will be O2 Refresh customers who've completely paid off their Device Plan in full - we will therefore allow iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus to be unlocked.

Pay Monthly and Pay & Go Customers
If you're a Pay Monthly customer, you can ask for your handset to be unlocked at any time, for free. This policy may vary depending on your handset.

Don't forget that you'll still need to see out your contract even if you place a non-O2 sim into your phone.

To request for your phone to be unlocked, you'll need to complete our online form

If you're a Pay & Go customer, your O2 mobile can be unlocked 12 months after purchase for a one-off £15 fee which we'll deduct from your airtime balance. This policy may vary according to the handset you have purchased.

That may be what is in O2's terms, all I know from experience of all O2 phones we have had, including upgrades from O2 that they were all unlocked (never had an iphone though). Never had to fill a form in. I guess they could have changed their practices though, the last O2 phone I received is just over a year old.

Doesn't help the OP much though if it's the latest iphone he's after.

I got a videophone iPhone 5 and its cost me £25 from radio shack to get unlocked, not a jail break. I have since upgraded the os and all is still well. only problem with vodaphone is the time they take to get an unlock code to you

EE say up to 5 days
