I've got an interview for the Editorial and Advertising course next month. I was just wondering if anyone is at, or has studied there?

Just looking for general advice on what to expect and what's expected of me, cheers in advance!

Hah, I'm just about to submit my application for the same course! Will be watching this one closely...

It looks a good course, while I won't have to make choices as such, it's currently my first preference I think, looks like a good course and I've heard good things, though the uni is having some money problems at the moment....

I think portfolio wise I'll do a pretty standard 'nice portfolio book and a load of 8*8 or 10* 10 prints, maybe with some setup shots / concept sketches etc showing development process etc...

Which campus is that on then?

Here's a tip, for any interview really, take a notepad in with you with some notes that you want to talk about and some questions for the interviewers (they ask sometimes). It show's your prepared and if they question why you have it, say you wanted to come prepared.

It shows you're interested in going to the interview, have planned and prepared for it and are not just trying to wing it.

Man....

when I went to this interview over a year ago, I was feeling really good about it....until I got there. By half way through the tour I knew it wasn't the place for me! _I_ have a bigger pile of digital camera chargers than their media store did, there appeared to be an enforced mimimum of 5 face piercings, and the studios were a dump.. watching a set of 3rd years waving a dslr around a flower sitting on a table, with no real apparent thought or process to lighting composition or anything... made me wonder wtf was actually taught on the course... and even more unlikely, how what was taught was directly relevant to modern commercial advertising photography.

The interview was with the very...eccentric... guy, and went terribly. Genuinely awful. Yes I had my questions to ask, and I'm not too bad at ********, but this was a whole other level. They didn't ask anything about photography really... asked what the last book that I read was, among other things...
He sends me outside, I come back in and 'we'd love to offer you a place.... are you coming?' I was shocked to be honest, lol...

I couldn't quite bring myself to say 'no' to his face...lol.

Where else have you applied?

That's fairly standard questioning.
Your portfolio is important, but they are more interested in developing you as a person, so what you are reading, seeing and watching is very important.
It's I a good course, I photographed a student there a couple of years ago for the Times, standard of work was really good, and Cheltenham is a great place to live, I worked there for a couple of years and went on some fantastic jobs in the Cotswolds.
Just don't do any projects on horses, they have probably seen it hundreds of times before ;)

Didn't notice that this thread was from 2010 :bonk:

I applied for the photojournalism and documentary photography.
I don't really no what to make of that interview either. Some of the work that i looked at was really good, other bits just seem bland. He liked my personal work and my journalism college work but wasnt at all interested in my abandoned buildings project which i did at college. Then he said that there was only 20 places on the course, and not all 20 go through to the second year  And also they primarily work with nikon, and i have a canon, so couldn't really borrow much equipment.

Also what i found strange is that they are interviewing people, showing them the campus and the accommodation when the whole thing is being moved to a different area, which by the sounds of it they haven't even started yet.

I have an interview at
Bath spa - photography and digital media
Falmouth - press and editorial
Gloucestershire - photojournalism and documentary

have a letter saying they have received my application for newport - documentary photography
and staffordshire asked me to come to an interview date, which i replied i couldn't because i don't have the money to travel to more than one interview a week at the moment and got an automated email back confirming it, so i rang them, haven't heard anything yet though.

Are you at uni now then? Where to if you are?

Sammy
