Folks,
My daughter has an interview for a University course on photography, she has been tasked with providing a number of her own photos with the theme being Borders.
I normally don't have an issue with taking her places to find inspiring shots but am struggling for ideas on this theme, I am thinking hedgerows, fences etc.
Thought I would pose the question on here to see if anyone else has any ideas they could throw in the pot.
Cheers

I wonder if you could throw in frames such as picture frames, door and window frames. Also borders between light and dark such as shadows?

Another could be two colours butting up against each other.

Mark, love the idea of shadows, did think about picture frames
Thanks mate

Point her towards Roget's or any of the online thesaurus websites..

Remember, a clever interviewer will ask her how she developed the set from the theme provided. A cunning question to identify those candidates with their own imagination, ideas and initiative.

A landscape photograph can be framed by the trunk of a tree on one side, a roughly horizontal bough going partly overhead, etc.. It's a question of imagination. Shoot a cityscape though the arch of a shadowed bridge. That's just the concept of bordering the image. As another points, she'll be asked to explain her thought processes in developing the theme. She should be telling you where she wants to go!

Thanks Chris, I hear what you and Alistair are saying and I know she should be calling the shots, I just wanted to get others peoples ideas on what borders could represent.
We have been going out the last few nights around town looking for interesting twilight shots, the theme being the border between light and dark, next thing is to get her up early enough to catch the dawn..luckily that's not 4am at this time of year

With all due respect, this is a task set to assess HER ability to interpret the theme creatively, not YOURS, or OURS. Us giving you ideas to pass on to her is basically cheating her way onto the course.

She should research the ideas herself.. this is what the task is for, as she'll be expected to research autonomously herself once she's a student. Are you going to ask us for help for all her assignments too?

I find no respect in your reply, she is and will continue to do the work herself but as a parent I will do everything I can to help where I can. I get the General consensus so please people no more replies are required..in fact if the mods wish to delete this thread then do so.

@Jesoid - John, as per usual David is as subtle as a brick in the testicles. And it's typical that he's rushed to get a kick in without appreciating that the same idea was already being presented in a more gentle fashion.

I don't like presenting a fait accompli to this type of request, but I do remember what it was like to be set such a task at the age of 17/18. Particularly when at that age you may not have the experience to find the tools to explore a theme. And I do like a creative challenge that gives me something to think about. Without giving any specific ideas, a good approach is to really think what "borders" are and what they mean - dictionary definitions and thesaurus entries are useful starting points, and so are quotes. Sites like BrainyQuote and QuoteGarden are useful for this. The more research she does into what the theme could mean, the more likely she'll develop an idea of her own about how to approach it.

Fine.. cheat then.. up to you. I appreciate a father wanting to help their child as much as anyone, but would you take her driving test for her if you possibly could, or her write her dissertation for her? Ultimately you're NOT helping her. You'll give her a eg up onto a course that she may well not be able to cope with, and waster £9000 per year doing so. Let her deal with the task set her like most of the other students will be doing. It's a test to assess her suitability for the course, and you are simply cheating.. simple as that.

Then you haven't the experience to be on the course. Some WILL have the experience, and faculties to actually do the research themselves... Simple as that. Entrance tasks are set for a reason. Just because you're PAYING for a university course, doesn't mean you get to call the shots. If you can't pass an entrance exam without your parent's help, or asking for help on the internet, then you've no right to be on that course.. no more than you'd have a right to a driving license if someone else sat your driving test for you. There is NO argument against this. It's cheating pure and simple. You're not HELPING... you're doing the work for her, as thinking of the idea and concepts ARE the test here :) Shooting the idea once it's given to on a plate is child's play. They'll not be as anywhere near as interested in her technical skills as you imagine they are - they want to see how she THINKS!.. and you're doing the thinking for her here. Cheating.

There is help out there... but it's HER job to research the subject.

It's simply NOT fair on other students who will be attempting the same task legitimately. She deserves to not get in, sorry. Year on year I have to put up with students who find ways to try and circumvent doing any ****ing work themselves, and ultimately, they're just wasting their time, as they'll take this degree out into the wider world where people will just fire your sorry ass if they find out you have to run to the internet every time something difficult heads your way.

*Mod edit. Absolutely no need.*

Don't call people pathetic please or you will find yourself on a short break. You have very strong views on things but take a step back and realise how you put things across
