Uniqball - any users out there?

I still have my 45 with X head if you are still interested Stuart, if so I’ll repost it here for you
Ahh mate I spent ages last night looking for it in the forum classifieds................ I faiiled to find it so I thought it had sold... literally in the last half hour II have just pulled the trigger on a used mint flexshooter pro I found on line.........

Graham thank you every day is a school day, I'd not heard of this company before, cool range of products I'll look at them again (y)

Good luck.

When I was a "lad" this was the lens (made by Novoflex) I dreamed of owning for bird photography

Y'know G sometimes I just feel so damn fortunate to talk to you orrible lot..the sheer knowledge wisdom bla de bla.

It's also the purity Graham a young lad dreamiing of a lens to make bird pics. I don't think I'll ever really be a photographer. Funny mate as a tot I was dreaming of being with 'em and painting pictures of 'em........... rather than camera twas a brush.

The camera came in as a reference tool. I used to work in intense detail I guess G. I'd pull 12 hours shifts on a pic, and then one day I twigged if my primary goal was a photograph not a painting I'd probably spend a hell of a lot more time face in the mud with some stunning ickle beastie

I guess we all have our own unique pathways into wildlife Graham. Soz for the waffle that little lad got to me buddy  (y)

On the assumption that the Flexshooter works the same way as the Uniqball. which, In spite of the differences, as they were both designed by the same people, I suspect they will I have a tip that might save you a lot of frustration.

Although the construction of the head is described in terms of an inner ball and an outer ball, the "inner" ball works like a pan and tilt head, not a ball head. With the outer ball working like a levelling base for this pan and tilt head. Although this is actually obvious, until I got used to it, I found I kept on expecting the "inner ball" to work like a ball head, which it doesn't and can't..

There are a few others things that you need to "learn" about using these heads, as when you are using them for general use (as opposed to a gimbal substitute) you often end up needing to combine adjusting the outer and inner balls in an iterative manner to find the right position. This can be massively frustrating, if lose sight of the inner being a pan and tilt head, and that you aren't simply trying to manipulate two ball heads.

A third issue, which may not be the same with the Flexshooter, in spite of the levelling ball + Pan and tilt ball approach, the Uniqballs don't work as pano heads because the panning axis is in the wrong plane. This has the weird effect of while keeping the horizon horizontal when you pan, it allows the level horizon to move vertically within the frame.

You don't notice this when panning a flying bird, because relative to the bird the horizon stays level, but you do notice it, if you are trying making multiple images to stitch together as a pano.

This may or may not be helpful, but just in case it might be, I thought it worth mentioning, as I found both my uniqballs took a bit of time to get used to.

If I remember correctly the thing I found most frustrating with the Uniqball was that on sloping, uneven ground you had to re-level the outer ball each time you moved the tripod. If it been possible to use the outer ball as a ball head as well that would have helped (IIRC), but the locking mechanism (IIRC) was very crude..

Good luck.
Thank you Jerry.........................I'm now trying to get my head around a lens foot for the 400 DO ii........lens feet seem hellish expensive. I'm not sure right now if flexshooter make a " big foot" that is compatable....if I'm right it will be the same model as for a 300 f/2.8 IS ii

I already have an arca swiss on the DO iii which is quite long but I don't like the single connection point. So once the new head comes I'm going to explore the balance points with and without EXT's and then maybe invest in a new foot with integral dovetails to replace the canon jobbie. It seems crucial I can make all senarios balance properly

Anyone reading this please do chime in with thoughts brands etc

My interest was wildlife and all things countryside, my parents weren't interested in these things but I had one grandfather keen on birding and fly fishing and the other interested in shooting, My parents, keen to support my interests (or maybe just to rid of me), got me involved with local naturalists groups from the age of 5 or 6.

I did a little bit of drawing and painting, but nothing that I was ever happy with, and it didn't inspire me to carry on. At about 10, I was given a darkroom kit and made some prints of my Dad's negatives in my bedroom. Watching those first prints emerge in the developer tray had me hooked on photography for life, even though I spent 2/3rds of my career as an ecological consultant/lecturer (the other third was in professional photography).

As I remember it was the photographs of David and Katie Urry that drove the lens lust, as this was the lens they used.

Graham I'll take all tips really appreciate all help. Buddy I have so little experience I have never used a ball head...so I don't really come with much preconception.

I've mused releveling outer ball at length Jerry...............I'm potentially going to try and do that a few yards from a hare or roe in full view........should be interesting:runaway::LOL:

TBH only time will tell for me Jerry I am simply so naive I am completely unsure what will bother me at this stage

With the Uniqball, I often used the outer ball on it's own, In fact I found it better than the inner ball a lot of the time because I could tighten the outer ball without any slippage where as the inner ball used to shift when tightening.

I did discuss this with Uniqball, and they said the inner ball was designed for panning, and only to adjust for the weight of lens and camera,. For close up/landscape work where you wanted to avoid slippage, they recommended using the outer ball. But I understand from reviews that the Flexshooter doesn't show any slippage while locking either ball.
