I bought a lens on Ebay a few days ago costing over £600. The seller had specified postage via RMSD for £20. This was about right as the lens was in the 2kg bracket so the postage would have been £20.70

I've been chasing the seller up over the last few days as I've heard nothing about when I should receive it or any tracking number. Yesterday I received a reply saying the lens had been posted First Class and should be with me Friday or Saturday. I couldn't believe that! Sending over £600 of lens via an untraceable and uninsured delivery method! I was hoping he'd made a mistake.

This afternoon the lens finally arrived.....via First Class. The cost? £6.40! Not only am I very unhappy that this 'professional photographer' of a seller with over 300+ feedback could send a lens this way, but I feel ripped off as I paid £20 for RMSD!

What would you do? I've asked for a postage refund at the least
 
I doubt that there is anything you can do just leave feed back to the "crux" of your post
As you know (s)he can't leave you negative feedback.
Or ask for a partial refund BEFORE you leave - feedback it might work :shrug:
Again there are no ebay fees on postage thats how some make up their "money"
 
Very bad, someone with 300 feedback taking a chance like that. Nothing to lose by asking for some relief on the postage but I'd consider giving a -ve feedback to discourage it happening again.
 
If he specified RMSD and used another service I'd ask to be re-imbursed, and I think this is reasonable.

You might not get it though - I think you might be able to raise a Paypal dispute for a postage overcharge (this is probably overkill though)

It could be an honest mistake - I sold something on Ebay a while back and mistakenly had RMSD in the listing from a previous auction (my postage cost was £1.25), so I mailed the buyer and said look, RMSD was a mistake, is First Class Recorded OK,and they were fine...
 
The last few things he's sold have all been camera items ranging from £200-£700 and all of them have RMSD prices ranging from £6 to £20.

Just makes me wonder how the lens was treated if someone can hold such little regard for what postal service they use for their expensive items

Of course, I wouldn't condone such dishonesty.
 
but on the other side, if he never had a problem with royal mail, (and remember this time of year everyone seems to do stupid things) he prob didnt give it much thought.

thing is, if it had gone missing, it would be his problem and he would have lost out. so he was playing with his own money(obviously would have affected you, but you would reclaim costs through ebay or paypal). i doubt they treat it much better whether it is RMSD or first class

I dont condone this action either, but it really would teach this dishonest git a thing or two, and have got your postage back, oh and everything else you paid :lol:
 
if he sent it untraceable (ie. not signed for) , id probably do the above.
 
I have been selling swarovski crystal on ebay for quite a long time,i would get in touch with ebay & complain about postage overcharging,i have done this in the past.:(

Haha, I've already sent him a message saying I can't believe he only paid £6.40 for postage. Otherwise it would have been tempting.

I still can't get my head around it
 
you can always just ask him nicely why you paid £20.
you can also rate the fairness of the cost of shipping when you give the feedback. Would be interesting to see what his rating is

OOoh coincidence....me too!

You can put in a complaint about post overcharging - and he's very lucky that he's not got an INR claim on his hands sending an item like that uninsured!

We all make mistakes - I've managed to send SD items Recorded, but if pointed out to me (or if I realise) would always refund entire post cost as an apology immediately. Wait and see what he has to say and take it from there.
 
You can meet some of the nicest people over ebay (not :thumbsdown:), many of us have probably had problems with ebay sellers, I nearly got done a few years ago for a £1000, took two weeks to eventually receive the item, & he wouldn't reply to emails, had to threaten legal action, & the "mint condition" cannondale racing bike paid £600, that I wouldn't have paid £10 for, fit for the skip only, luckly got a refund less carrage.

Neg feedback is there for a reason and you can use it without an issue as he cannot neg you back any more as sellers cannot leave negative feedback for buyers any more.
 
Can I add something, £20 for £2kg? ... You won't believe me on this, but I sent an 11kg package via RMSD before 1.30 pm for just £14.

Perhaps they misread the scales?

It's £14.00 for up to 1Kg with a 9am delivery and £50-worth of insurance.

RM's rates only cover up to 10Kg for special delivery.

That doesn't sound right, are you sure it didn't go Parcelfarce that's roughly about what I pay for that sort of weight.....
 
Interesting. Still no response so I decided to go through the Paypal dispute process. I chose 'postage cost' dispute and submitted it. After the page loaded it said Paypal doesn't cover this type of transaction and I'd have to discuss a postage refund with the seller. It did still open a dispute.

20 minutes later I get an email saying the seller had decided to send the dispute to Paypal for them to decide. They decided that a claim of this type doesn't come under Paypals guarantee.

The interesting part is that it seems like the seller has been onto Ebay to do this but not bothered to reply.

I think I'm going to leave my feedback pretty soon and add this guy to my blocked list
 
what i did about 3 year's ago when i was ripped off was set up a new ebay account using a different e-mail address (not sure you can do it now) and bought every thing he had listed as buy it now...238 items in total...then once he'd sorted that out with ebay (about 5 days later) set up another new account and did the same...told him it was me doing it and i would continue until he refunded my money..guess what refund by return

Hello,

The post office advised me that due to the weight of the parcel the option available to me was 1st class. You are obviously aware that postage also covers insurance and packing and obviously the time and effort to actually go to the post office promptly and post the item.

You were offered the option to collect in person during the auction as well. The item was dispatched promptly, well packaged and exactly as described.

You are welcome to contact ebay, but I will of course send them a copy of this email.

report him. If he said RMSD he should have sent it via that. Ebay sale is a legally binding contract i believe, so get him reported. Some little scrote tried shafting me over a tripod, and if paypal would look into that, then im damned sure they would look into a £13 rip-off on postage, they changed the rules to stop that sort of thing.

What b****cks. I just sent a EOS 1N (to someone on TP actually) via RMSD that weighed in at about 2.5kg and it cost me £20.70. It did come as a bit of a shock as I'd been expecting about £8, but as I wanted to insure it for at least £250 and because I'd said that I'd send it by RMSD I absorbed the unexpected cost. First class does not give the required insurance of £600

I'd leave negative feedback saying that the seller didn't ship by RMSD as advertised, the item arrived late (causing you extra expense to source an alternative for your pre-appointed photoshoot... or something along those lines).
 
As mentioned above, you can send up to 10Kg by RMSD.

A good seller would know what the item would cost to send before listing it.

Ordinary mail does not include insurance for high value items, and I very much doubt he's taken out his own insurance.
 
Its probably more helpful if you post his Ebay user name rather than a link to his Galleries?
 
Glad you left him negative, Cheapskate seller charging £20 and sending first class deserves it on a £600 expensive lens.:)

Quotes £40 to Cyprus, £30 to Italy. Makes you wonder if that would go first class too.:gag:

His motto on his website is "professional, reliable, affordable" so he should be up for a chat given your experience with him was the complete opposite.

It looks like his pro togging business isn't paying the bills so has to rip people off with postage to get by :thumbsdown:

That comment isn't even funny.

Someone did that to me once and left me very much out of pocket. I sold a digital camera on ebay with an underwater housing. Sent it as I should have the recipient never signed for it and claimed he never got it. PayPal were not interested one bit in my side of the story and credited the buyer back without question.

I was left with a very hefty billl. The Post Office is rubbish, I would never, ever use them to send anything with more than a first class stamp on.

The camera and housing I sold on ebay was back in Feb this year. Finally after months of threats and cursing, eight days ago I received a cheque from Royal Mail to approx a third of the value of the item.

Just because you send something insured and recorded, it doesnt mean Royal Mail assume full responsibility to make sure it gets to where it should be going. Read the small print!

Your suggestion sucks matey even though you did try to cover yourself by putting a disclaimer. You sound like a really trustful and honest person. Perhaps you should put your ebay id on here to warn people off ever selling anything to you.
 
Have you seen Mr Rip-Offs response on ebay - "do not bid if you dont agree to postage costs" - you agreed to £20 for RMSD which you didn't get so you've done something about it which he now doesn't like.

Good on you for the way you've handled it.
