A couple of weeks ago I was snapping some images of flowers in the garden (under orders from SWMBO) and got some odd results. The images are as you would expect really (i.e. boring flower shots) except that in amongst a batch of 42 pictures there are 3 monochrome ones - 5 colour / 3 mono / 34 colour. All of the colour photos are recorded as NEF (Nikon's raw format) but the mono ones are jpg - and I know that I didn't make any changes to the camera settings during this shoot.
This is the 5th colour image

followed by the first mono one

I was shooting in Manual mode with auto-iso selected as I usually do. Both were shot at 1/400s at f/5.6 for the colour and f/4 for the mono. The ISO went from 900 for the colour image to 6400 for the mono, which I think is a bit odd too.
Thoughts/ideas on how this happened?
