sorry, were not helping
what are you taking pictures of, what camera you using, how deep are you going?

i have no idea bout this type of photography, but i guess a little more info might help a bit

What about underwater disposables? I'm hoping to get my hands on one or two of these for my trip in a few weeks...

wetsuit, flippers, goggles and an airtank

Fins and Mask and cylinder actually...

depends where your going, depth, clarity of water and what your actully hoping to take, fish, coral or all the little goodies like nudibrancs

Have a chat with the guys at Cameras Underwater: http://www.camerasunderwater.co.uk/
Very helpful people and they'll tell you what you need to hear (as opposed to what might make a sale).

got both my dive cameras from here, my compact and my DSLR and housing... can't go far wrong if you purchase through these guys.

as for the disposables, avoid these unless your only in the top 5 meters of water

Another vote for Cameras Underwater. Incredibly helpful people.

For underwater you will need flash light. BUT a flash near the lens axis will, literally, backfire: the light reflects straight back into the lens by a zillion tiny little thingamyjigs floating in the water like just as many little mirrors. It is the same effect that you get when you flip up your car's headlights in a snow storm. Instant blinding.
You will need a light source well distanced from the lens axis, like 18" minimum, on a flash light extension arm. Preferably two.

Enjoy your vacation.

Thank you all once again, really appreciate the help,
Jim

A slave flash is the best for this if your using a compact, thus allowing your built in flash to trigger the slave, the benifit to the slave over your built in is its away from the camera and usually you can angle it where you want it. as previoulsy stated the biggest problem is the back scatter you get in the water , this is generally caused by plankton, and the bigger the bloom the worse the back scatter is. i dived Lundy this weekend with the seals and the plankton bloom was so bad it was totally pointless taking anything, even up close with macro you get terrible backscatter. as for the med youre going to have to deal with the very blue water, so if you don't use a good flash all your photos will just come out blue, a dissapointing result, but again that depends where in the med you go. my photos from Spain come out a completely different colour to those around Italy and Sardinia.
hope this helps

Martyn
