Hi all

I'm after some help.

I'm off to Thailand in November for 10 days doing 3 nights Bangkok and 7 in krabi island.

on the trip, we plan to scuba dive/snorkel.

I'm on the lookout for a waterproof camera which won't break the bank....any suggestions?

You might find a second hand Canon D10 somewhere - you've got plenty of time for the search! Probably best kept at snorkelling depth rather than SCUBA but TBH, anything capable of much over 10m is unlikely to be a budget option.

I Have used a Canon D10 a fair few times, in fact I've used 3 of them... imo build quality is shoddy all 3 fell foul of water penetration at depths of about 4 meters. rather than accept a 4th from them i went for an Olympus tg-2 and I've found it absolutely superb. Waterproof down to 15 meters (ive tested this, the screen cover tends to depress but otherwise it was fine) nice fast/bright f2 lens.

i think they are about £215 which might well be out of budget but thought i would mention it as i found it so good.

ill see if i can find some pictures where ive used it:

Second hand canon s90 or S100 with canon housing if you can get hold of one
This is a great solution but the housings are tricky to find and pricey!

If you want a dedicated water proof camera (standard 10m jobs) the current king is the olympus TG2 but it is expensive! Below that olympus and pentax make some great cameras and have loads of experience in the area.

If you want cheap have a look at the fuji range on the outlet store decent cameras at great prices for a few holiday memories!

What is your budget when you say you don't want it to break the bank? I've found the GoPro's good enough and if you're wanting a picture you can just pick a frame out of the video, or are you after more of a camera like mentioned above?

Well, my D10 has remained watertight and delivers far better images than the (NON waterproof, whatever their claims..) Olympus (Mju 770SW) it replaced. Much easier to use too (bigger buttons). I've now got a Nikon AW1 but that's well above the OP's budget.

My biggest gripe with Olympus was the totally crap "customer service" - and I'm not the only person to have had problems with them.

Fujifilm xp range of compact cameras are good, my other half used an xp60 with results she was pleased with, waterproof to a depth of 25 feet, 70 quid on ebay depends on whst you want to pay

If you are only going to use it this once have you considered a waterproof case for your mobile phone (if you have a phone with good picture quality). I have just bought a waterproof case for my Samsung Galaxy S3, going to use it on my hols in a few weeks.
Just a thought :)

Hi Everyone, only just managed to get a few mins on here. I'm after more of a camera rather than video cam. I'll be only snorkelling in krabi island so it will only be 2 days max. just looking for something around the £250 max.

Update. Been looking at all options above, and also noticed the nikon aw range.

has anyone had experience with the aw100,110 or 120?

The 120 is on offer at argos at min for 250

I wouldn't be happy taking a 'tough' body diving. With the exception of the cannon D30 non of them even claim to be waterproof to depths even a PADI 'open water' qualifies you to. Ideally something with a dedicated housing which kind of puts to end to cheap. For a compact housing expect to pay about the cameras worth again, or another option are EWA-Marine bags. A go pro is another option - well worth while.
