as im new im going to be asking alot of questions lol, is there a section to help me understand the difference in the lenses like 18-70 and 70-300, and what they are used for and when. as i havent got a clue. or can someone enlighten me please cheers. im waiting for my sony A300 to arrive through the post and im eager to get out there and start snapping

those numbers are the focal length - the lower the number the wider the field of view.
(FOV)
the lenses are used for taking pictures lol the lens you use depends on how much of the scene you want to capture.

Without being rude I can understand why people moan about people wanting to be spoon fed information.

Plenty of time for you to google and read like crazy before your camera comes. :)

The higher the number, the further away you can see :)

An 18-70mm lens has a moderate amount of zoom. 70-300mm has quite a substantial amount of zoom available.

18-70 is a fairly standard kit lens range as is useful as a general walkabout, being reasonably wide even on a crop sensor and having a 1/2 decent reach. The 70-300 is a fairly natural companion, taking over when the 18-70 isn't long enough and reaching out to 300mm for telephoto purposes.

Once you have the kit, just wander round with it and see what circumstances seem to demand which lens - birds in the trees or on the beach may require the 70-300 (or even longer) while street scenes and people pics will probably want the shorter lens.

Hi, take a look at Lens hero, enter the focal length you are intersted in and it'll give you an idea of what to expect.

What a load of tosh. I can see the Andromeda galaxy through my 24mm lens, which is several million light years away. How far away do you want to see!? :cuckoo:

:agree: On a clear day . . . I can see forever . . . with any lens. LOL
