We did an event last weekend with my buddies laptop and a new DNP printer. Print quality was fine. I have tried some from my own laptop and they are distinctly darker by 3/4 stop or so. The image displays correctly but prints too dark, I have tried different images and printed out of windows, lightroom and PS all with the same results. Don't whether there is a global setting that's incorrect but would be grateful for some ideas!

Calibrate the laptop screen.

Don't get it! If the same image looks ok, and the same, on two different laptops but prints dark off mine how can that be calibration?

Because they're different laptops with different screens, because the human eye-brain is a dynamic system and compensates for the brightness of objects you're looking at so there is no objective comparison you can make just by looking at the same image on two different screens.

Calibration, it needs to be done.

Mmmm still don't get it and thank you for persevering with me! My buddy sends me an image which prints fine on hers but dark on mine, its the same file, how can it be calibration?

The problem is you've got three points of difference and you're expecting an exact match.. different screens and different printers, and different software as well. All of these can independently influence how an image appears on the screen vs. how it appears in print. And that's before you start factoring in that using different printers will often mean different inks and different papers.

Try reading this.. Tutorials on Colour Management.

For my day-to-day needs I find that making sure I have the right colour space and calibrating the screen is generally sufficient - printer profiles get a bit esoteric for home printing on a Selphy, but I do install the profiles for DSCL for sending prints away to be printed.

Quick tip

Turn the screen brightness down untill it matches your dark print. Now adjust the image in whatever processing software you have until it looks fine. Now print

I agree with Alastair screen calibration is essential to get good screen to print match, however this suggestion may help.

More likely to be a printer/paper calibration issue.
If it's the same image the screen brightness is not the issue.

Get a custom profile for the paper/ink/printer you use.
