Beginner Underexpose Shots with Lots of Highlights?

At 200, I definitely had much less noise after brightening. I didn't see any need at all for noise reduction in Lightroom, and I believe the same thing was true in Photolab.

I can't speak to the specific results as I don't know what controls were in place... i.e. LR does some sharpening and noise reduction automatically by default; perhaps a lot if it was trying to replicate the camera's jpeg settings.

It would probably help if I had selected the right camera...
If it makes you feel better, I was confused about other things and had not gotten around to being confused by your graph.

Maybe you just need to experiment and do what works for you?

I did tests before with the old A7 - set 'correct' exposure at a pretty high ISO and then dropped it by one stop at a time. In LR I then brightened each file by the relevant 'stops' to match the original high ISO file and compared them all.

On the A7Riii, I don't really worry about what the ISO is set to because it's not really noticeable in final images anyway.
