Unconfirmed Jessops rumour

Not all experinces of Jessops are poor, I shared a great experience earlier this year when my Tripod Head broke, they completely replaced the Camera and Lens free of charge and without too much quibble. I'm sure that is a rare occurance but still pretty good nonetheless.

The shares are tempting, even if they only rise to where they were 3 weeks ago you COULD triple your investment....

15p a share.... just 3 months ago they were 150p a share... amazing drop.

this happens to jessops every year, shares plummit around easter and pick up at summer, but that is really low, im tempted to invest but this seems very dodgy

It's just like gambling only invest what you can afford to lose. If you have an extra 1k what the heck....

If you had a couple of K doing nothing, I think Jessops would be worth a squirt.
If they go up to a quid a go, you'll return a tidy profit :)

Since the jessop family left a few years back and there was a management buy out its been gradually going downhill for them. They tried to buy up all other camera companies and expand way too quickly while alot of their better staff left and were replaced by half wits with no knowledge at all.

From the Telegraph...:

There are too many other choices, especially online these days, Jessops just haven't moved with the times i'm afraid. Even the online prices are not cheap or even competiitive - I can see them having an online presence, at least in the short term, but most of the unprofitable stores closing, this is where the money goes IMO.

Jessops have been quite good to me and i find them useful to look and try kit before i commit to buy either from them or other sources. Brought a used 50mm f/1.4 from a guy and it was purchased from Jessops. It delevloped a fault and so jessops repaired it under warranty without a problem. Once repaired it exprienced the same problem after a month and so i took it back and they just replaced it with a new one when i was expecting it to be sent back to cannon for a repair. I was told that the new lens will have 1 year warranty aswell and so was given a new reciept.

Today i went in to by the 5d with the 24-105 kit lens which was reserved (4 days ago) for me for £1999.99 (was deciding if i should buy or not) and when i went to pick it up today, the price had been increased to £2099.99. Store manager said they could do nothing so I walked out. Then I had a tap on my shoulder and was given some BS and i can have it for £1999.99 if i still wanted it. So i walked back in and got myself a bargain!

HOW can anyone say jessops aint a good store...they r like the pc world or currys of photography..ok you paya bit more but u get piece of mind if somethign goes wrong.,,,i bought 5d and the 75-200 l lens and 580ex plus 4 gig extreme 3 cf and lowepro nova aw bag all for £2300 3 weeks ago ans the deal got me a jessops flash for free for my 350d....so is that a rip off store or not??? i dont think so....

Now go back and ask them how to use it all...... I'm definitely not saying you don't know how to, no way - I'm saying a good store shouldn't be judged on what prices you pay but on how well they support you afterwards. With Jessops it's very much down to luck and where you live...... and whether there's an 'r' in the month :(

I agree completely.
Just got my copy of dSLR, Jessops have completely changed the style of ad's and dropped it to just 4 pages, the price promise is back (it applies to the magazine prices, not the web) be interesting to see if the same ad runs in the other mags. No prices quoted in the ad for lenses at all.

i've never been a fan of jessops but last week it was raining...

so i poped in and kept dry

thank you jessops

got a flash from them the other day - managed a web-price match... can't complain sicne was cheapest I could have got it for anywhere for new. plus £10 cashback from canon...better than a kick in the teeth

Jessops only made 6.5 million last year - for a company that size it is nothing.

Their CEO was paid 10% of that. Shocking!!

My money is on them going under. I can't see anyone being interested in them, their rents are probably high. When the shares went as low as 13 or 16p whatever it was, they were fair game for takeover, no-one did it.

I really do hate large corporate conglomerates... :bang:

What happened to Wallace & Heaton?
Do you know who W&H were owned by, for a long long time, until they closed it down?

(a much much larger corporate than Jessops!)

I work at jessops in basingstoke - and yes in comparison to the net we are expensive, but you cant go back to the store for a complaint and have it dealt with, nor a reliable customer repair sevice. And Jessops is THE biggest photography retailer out of the few there are!

im 16 and i work at a jessops store, and you will find the older people tend to be better at selling but sometimes with the wrong things

Holy thread revival Batman, this one is nearly 2 years old

Holey thread revival Batman.

Edit: Kelack beat me to it.

And the service Ive received in most Jessops stores (having spent thousands in there) is enough to send me to the net, never mind when I have made a complaint.

Sorry. I really am. But in my opinion Jessops NEEDS to go. Bring back the independant I say.

Not always that far away on price and you do have high street backup and warrenty. I bought canon 55-250 IS plus filter and lens hood at my local Jessops for £200-00 very little more expensive than the opposition and I used it the same day. They always offer me discount on anything big and if it,s not enoph I tell them where I can buy cheaper and walk away if they wont match it. Lots of nice people do a good job there.
I HOPE THEY DO NOT GO BUST!!

I wonder how many of their top execs have an interest in photography, probably none.
They have had a financial bullseye on the back of their head for nearly two years. Their marketing strategy was a tad unsure of what they were trying to achieve.

Is a shame all the same. I have forgotten about Woolies already.:(

jebus, I read all that crap for nothing, surely I didn't deserve that just for being slightly date insensitive....did I.

Can we have a vote on padlocking the new sign-ups door again pls..

lol aye this is an old thread!

Turns out investing in 15p stocks might have been a good thing then! Mega lol!

Took my SB-800 in to Jessops Newport for repair 3 weeks ago, got a call today from Jessops Cardiff saying it was ready for collection, The caller said that the Newport branch has now closed down.

What was funny is that this thread's been dragged up from the depths by someone who's only 2 posts have been on the thread, arguing that Jessops are good, and is a Jessops employee lol, if I was the suspcious sort I'd say they signed up just to argue that point :suspect:

Must be true, I always value the advice of 16-years old sales assistants when I'm spending £1000+ on a lens or body

I value the advice on here more than in any shop I've ever been in.

We have 2 shops in town that sell photographic equipment: Jessops and an independent retailer. Both match prices, however we ALWAYS shop at the independent retailer, and never use Jessops.

I wouldn't be surprised if they go bust, their prices are extortionate and tbh I'd always favour an independent retailer over a chain...

My local jessops (Hedge End) have Always matched the best UK price I have been able to find, including UK internet companies. Very friendly and despite a lot of peoples experience VERY VERY knowledgable. I really hope they keep going.

Went into the Maidstone branch to use up the gift card I got at Christmas before it became useless, bought a Lowepro Mini Trekker AW and was served by a young assistant that had just been taken on!
Didn’t like to tell him about the rumours!

surely that means the other shop's prices are either equally extortionate, or even more so?

I agree Dave. The Hedge End store has always been good to me, matching prices etc. Haven't been to any other Jessops stores though, so the Hedge End branch may be an exception rather than the rule.

I just looked at the Jessops website.
There looks like a few good discounts in the clearance section.
Shame I'm not near any of their shops that have the sale on.

It will also mean that if like me and you bought every bit of kit you have from them it will be back to the manufacturer with the products.
