Unconfirmed Jessops rumour

It will also mean that if like me and you bought every bit of kit you have from them it will be back to the manufacturer with the products.

Could be worse. I have a 3 year warranty on my 40D I bought from them, which is with Domestic and General. It's been away for repair to their preferred repairer for 4 weeks, Colchester Cameras (who I paid) fixed our 400D in a 6 day turnaround.

Ah, I panicked then!
I was like "ah, poo, why wasn't I told about this earlier?"

2 years old?
Aha. Jessops must be the worst up-down shop in the world.

As far as all the Jessops staff slagging off goes, cool it guys.
Some of them may not know their stuff, but that's no reason to wish they lost their jobs. Not cool.

80% the people in my store do photography as a hobby, one has her own photography portrait/wedding business, and the other is doing a photography degree at a vocational college. The only ones who don't do photography are the manager, the lab manager and a girl I work with at the weekend!

Please Jessops, please hold on at least until I'm in Uni :D

Who are the Domestic and General repairers?

When I claimed on my travel insurance for the LCD on my ixus 750 I just had to get a couple of quotes, Jessops wanted £150, Colchester £65.

Colchester are the approved Canon repair centre for various models, I'm not sure I'd want to send my camera anywhere else. I hadn't thought about these extended warranties resulting in your gear going somewhere different.

Holy thread resurrection, Batman! This discussion was virtually two years ago. Can't we just let it rest in peace, job done?

When they go bust, who else are we all going to speculate on?

I get all my gear cheaper in my local Jessops. Awesome store.

Gary.

I've bought everything cheaper elsewhere.

Last item was a Lowepro Vertex 200AW, £167 in Jessop's, £99.99 delivered from Morris

Jessops are cheaper for some things, the inconsistency in who is cheapest for what always surprises me.

I just price match warehouse express each time I use Jessops. Have not purchased for a while, but last time I checked, Warehouse Express was very competitive, and in turn, Jessops were, and local.

Gary.

Its only a matter of time before Jessops goes under.
Part of the problem is they have too many stores in one city. If you look at their shop listings like 2 years ago and from what i heard on here, they have like 5 stores in Glasgow, 2 in Cambridge etc...how can they maintain that many shops in a single area, wouldnt one do?

And as for the price of their products, bodies are usually cheaper, but things like memory cards is mental prices!!!

You're lucky, my local store will only price match other brick buildings within a 30 mile (give or take) area, and will price match online/magazines only with a voucher offering said service.

If my local store would price match WE I'd be a happy chappy

Yes that's my understanding of the policy here too. There was a time when they advertised that they would match on-line pricing but that was withdrawn here some time ago.

Although jessops are very expensive for almost everything.
it is handy them being the only photography shop in town for us and if you need something quickly jessops usually has it. if you dont mind paying more for the urgent need.
although i reckon the one in our town will be one of the first to close if the rumors are true.
soon dumfries high street will be a great place if your interested in wood to board up your windows.

of the 2 Jessops in the centre of Manchester (that I know about, deansgate and the one just off albert square), they've closed one. sadly it was the huge shop on deansgate which had a really nice range and a whole bunch of second hand stuff which I liked to browse.

the other jessops claims that the big shop is just moving but I'm not so sure...

i bought my 50d and 10-20 from jessops, after shopping around, they were the cheapest at the time.

My preference is to buy from Jessops whenever they are price competitive, but when they aren't I simply shop elsewhere. They have had my business for a Canon 40D, 1D3, G10 and a Sigma 10mm Fishy. I could have bought the Siggy about £10 cheaper elsewhere but for the sake of a tenner I thought I'd support my local store.

I bought my 30D/17-85 and 580EX from Camera2U, which I think were/are also part of the Jessops chain, and my Manfrotto 055MF3 tripod legs came from Tecno, which is no longer, but was also part of the group, I think.

Jessops do have the odd gem of a bargain, which I am happy to snap up, but in general they do seem well overpriced. When they earn the reputation of being too expensive then people stop looking. It is only www.camerapricebuster.co.uk that gets me back to them when I'm on the hunt for something new.

Camerapricebuster are showing the 5D Mark I being pretty much the same price as the Mark II!!!! Just another reason why I'm now looking at the D700 which is over £300 less at the moment.
