Hi Everybody.....
Ive recently enrolled on the Blackford Centre Diploma in Professional Photography. ( there is a dedicated thread for that course but no one seems to be replying recently)
I'm currently on Module 3 for anyone who knows the course. It seems a bit random to me. The module is entitled "Professional Photography" It goes through some of the do`s and donts of being a "Professional", with the only reference to taking actual pictures so far in the entire course being simple stuff like "watch your background", "light the background separately", and "use flash fill outdoors". That's it...
Then, out of the blue, it throws in the second assignment ( the first being a written piece), whereby it wants you to do a photoshoot of 50 pics or so of someone doing a hobby, sport or at work. ( 4 pieces to be chosen and submitted with a description of why)
Now, I attempted this on Sunday past. If I`m honest I had a nightmare of a time. It was one of the dullest days Ive seen, I dropped and broke my flash gun ( which im not up to speed in using anyway) and I have never had a successful time trying to photo my 8 year old stepdaughter.
She goes to a local dance group ( which was the 'hobby') and so that was the idea....get pictures of her dancing.
I think one of my main problems was location. I was attempting to use my living room (which is large 7m*7m) with wooden floors. Like I said it was a gloomy day so even the bay window wasnt letting in nearly enough light. So we moved out to the barn. I set up a single light setup but when she jumps ( the particular shot we were after) she is all over the place. We got nothing successful and that was when the flash fell and the battery cover smashed off.
I think her dancing alone, is part of the problem. Normally she is part of her troop and holds her own but when I get her on her own and the confidence saps out of her. I cannot photograph her at her class for consent reasons with the rest of the class.
To photograph her outside I think would look....odd. It would not be a normal environment that she would be dancing in. (although I did see an image the other day that Karl Taylor posted in a quarry that got me thinking).
So......given that I am not really sure what the assessment is looking for, that I have smashed my flash up, that I cant get photos of her in class, that shes 8 and (as one would expect) doesnt take direction well and that she would look out of context outside, what do I do?
I don't know anyone else with a hobby or that plays sport and my wife works in childcare so I wouldnt get pictures of her at work.
I have no hair left to tear out.....
Any ideas??
