Hit the unanswered posts link a while ago tonight and was surprised how many posts do not get replied to, it must be especially disheartening when first posts of pics do not get replied to, I replied to one from over 24 hours ago that was about to disappear off the page, although it was not praising the pics, it was a reply.
Is it because of the increased member numbers or are not so many posting replies now?, or a bit of both.

I normally try to visit the unanswered post section at least once a day as a rule however i have had a mad weekend and missed doing so today and yesterday.

Will visit tomorrow and pay my penance...

I think it's a bit of both.

With more members the forum moves quicker, there are more posts, and I guess people can/will only look at and comment on so much before they reach their limit.

I also think that to some degree less people are posting replies as well, and there is probably a small hardcore of people who always try and post something in most places.

I also find that more established members generally get more replies than newer members, which further extends the problem.

For me, the 'home' page scrolls too fast now, and a new post can fall off in 10 minutes sometimes. In addition with so much posting, 'home' is the best place to watch post and thus it ends up in a cycle i think which is to the detriment of some posters.

Well that's that solved, shame on you Shutterman:D

I have one from June last year with no replies = is this a record :D

I try and catch what posts I can but there's only so many hours in the day and I have commitments elsewhere too. I'd also say there are some posts I really want to reply to but I don't because I don't think my comment/thought would be appreciated ;)

I guess the old saying, when in doubt do now't...

Gunna start viewing the unanswered posts once a day too I think, because as Galaxy said, it must be disheartening not having a photo replied to.

Unanswered Posts is my first click when I visit the site. I've been away all weekend so I have not had time either, you're not the only one Shutterman. I'll do my fair share this week. I also now browse the forums to see if there are any posts with less than 3 posts and I try to add a reply if there's something I like.

I know how dispiriting it is not to get a response for more than a day. There's enough of to make comment. We should encourage those who have made few postings to post more, so I like to make sure we don't ignore/ put off the noobs.

And heres my 0 reply post after 1 year :D

Trick Cyclists

Sorry to have spoilt your record Dark Star but I replied before I had read this topic:bonk::)

Being a newbie here and fairly new to photography, I don't think I have the experience and knowledge to critiscise or offer suggestions about other peoples pictures (yet ;)), but I do reply to say I like a picture if that is the case, but there is so many good pictures here I haven't got the time to reply to them all.

This is wht I don't post any photos on here just browse around.

It is very dissappointing to eagerly look for replies a couple of days after posting to find it unanswered.

I think that this is very noble, fair, and appreciated by many. I also click on the unanswered posts, but much of the time I don't have the knowledge to comment fairly.
Keep up the good work R.H. and others.

Its inevitable that as new members sign up, most of them being new enthusiasts too, the ratio of experienced posters, although constantly growing, will continue to be out numbered by the amount of new inexperienced members.

So it’s the usual problem of not enough thoughts for too many images posted.

Some new members, most of them not all, obviously feel inadequately armed with critique knowledge, this tends to halt members from posting on other photographers images, we know this to be the case right.
The fear of saying something daft or unhelpful and in doing so possibly damage their own reputation! All before they've even started getting there own advice! Which is, after all why they're here.

Regular and experienced members are in a catch 22 situation in many ways, they’re always interested in helping new members, but sometimes you new guys can be very demanding and if those regulars don’t see you ever trying to be useful too, well, they’ll start feeling a bit used and abused, or if not that then just plain tired and frustrated at the one way flow, and who can blame them!

I could also argue that some people are just plain selfish and seemed to have few thoughts of all the help and effort afforded them. They seldom speak of appreciating the advice and never responding to all thoughts…let alone post thoughts on others as that seems to be the responsibility of others ffs.

I used to be like that too

…when I was ten.

My thoughts are ….. if you don't feel you can criticize adequately then just say something uplifting if you can. That’s easy enough I think, I know I'm quite happy to get a few 'nice shot', rather than just my usual buds backing me up as I do them. The trouble starts if you don't like an image I reckon, to counter that I find myself looking for some aspect I do like, even if the image is terrible there's always something I can relate to if I try..

And that’s what we all need to do too, put the effort in and as our Gloria would say. ‘Lead by example’

PS. Not directed at anyone: You can’t blame us old school lot for knowing each others works and progressions over the years, that’s what this place will do for you too, please don’t hold it against us for keeping up with each others stuff.
:)

I didn't realise there was an unanswered post section!!??

I use the UP link quite often, but if the new thread in question does not interest me, or I cant think of a nice way to say its a bit rubbish, then I just click back.

Sometimes I am just too busy at work, and dont have time to construct a useful reply, sorry guys :(

One of the things I see more and more is an image that has obviously got a problem - it may be OOF and you read the comments already posted like excellent sharp shot - or a shot with a busy background and the main focal point of the shot is very small dead centre of the frame and you see comments like Great shot excellent compassion etc and if you do post advice it’s just ignored or not even acknowledged..

Or some new member post a lot of threads with images that have problems and kicks off when the reponses are not what they wanted.

I took the tip about it from RH1944 and started to have a go when I can.

Some members (and this is most definately not a dig and anyone in particular) could learn how to use the search facility or even google. There are a load of questions asked that would have been more than adequately answered if they just took the time to look for the answer!

It seems to be an internet trait though as I've noticed it's not specific to here or photography in general, more people being a bit lazy and thinking "Oh I've got a question" and not bothering to look for the answer and expecting someone else to provide it.

Sorry that turned into a mini rant and I didn't intend it to!

It's great asking peoples opinions because that is where the human element is involved and I fully understand that part of it.

I'm off to look for some unanswered posts now, I wonder if we all had a go how quickly we could clear the board? :)

I'm sure I've seen this mentioned before but recently, whenever I click on Unanswered Posts all I get is

Sorry - no matches. Please try some different terms.

That occurs from time to time; it did when I logged on a minute ago. It's because some one has gone through the unanswered posts and replied to all of them.

If you can make the time, it's worth going through the forums and picking posts with less than (say) three replies. There's some great shots buried in there and, in a lot of cases, only one person has commented on it. By putting another reply, it'll be promoted back to Home and maybe more people will add replies. Even worse, the original poster has bumped it so it revisits Home, mainly because we have all found reasons not to comment. Some people post half the shots from the set and if there's no reply to that set, they add a reply with the remaining shots from the set, thus sending the thread back to Home.

Apart from one thread a month, this is not a competitive forum. We are here trying to learn and one of the best ways of doing that is helping others to learn. By putting our thoughts into text for the benefit of others helps us understand better what we do.

That's one of the reasons we're trying to discourage people from using the Home Page as a recent overview of all activity on the site since their last visit.

We'd have to make it 100's of threads long for it to be that.
It was useful maybe a year ago when we were getting a few posts a day.
Now however, the site is getting over 2,000 posts per day, so the front page is merely a 'snapshot' of the past few minutes, that's all.

For those that are going through the Unananswered Posts link, to make others feel welcome and so that no one doesn't get 0 replies to their pics.....THANKYOU

I usually scroll through the first two pages of a forum, but sometimes even that isn't enough and same day posts get 3rd paged. Might start using the 'unanswered' posts button more :)

Well that was a result, whenever I click on the unanswered post link there are none
