I am increasingly noticing a number of TIFF files which cannot be previewed and also cannot open in cs2. it says "unexpected end-of-line" when I try to open them.

This is getting quite scarey as I hope I havent lost them for ever!

Update: Can right-click them and open in microsoft document imaging! If I then save as a tiff........still cant open in photoshop or see as a preview.

Are these on your hard drive or on a remote disk Janice?

On my hard drive in folders with other TIFFs which are showing a preview and can be opened.

I've had this a few times before at work Janice. I have no explanation as to why it happens but it can usually be solved by opening the TIFF in another application and resaving the file

Hmm I did try that earlier. I will try a different program again and see.

Thanks.

Is it essential they stay as TIFFs? You could try opening in Document Imaging and saving as hi res JPGs

Obviously not a solution to the problem but a possible work around

Just another thought Janice, Photoshop can have a problem saving / opening very large TIFFs if saved without LZW compression

Huh!

All showing and opening and everything in Picasa. I just dont want to use Picasa! :|

export them using picassa to jpegs. atleast you'll have a spare copy for now that work till you find your problem. Which does sound to be very program specific if picassa is ok

Yeah, looks like I'll have to do that...but there's loads and they are all over the place....some in different folders.
What a job! Grrr! :bang:

I would've said it was Photoshop specific...but the thumbnails arent showing and thats a WINDOWS thing isnt it.

use the search tool for *.tiff in picassa

Wont that bring up all my tiffs....ie about 500 of them?

yes sorry i thought it was all of them.

Can you browse the folder(s) in PS, select and move or rename those files that wont preview? Then use Picasa on the offending items?

Long shot - dont suppose there's anything on Adobe Forums re problems with TIFF files?

I have discovered I can view thumbnails and open them in Lightroom ..then export to Photoshop and they open then!

Ive just reinstalled photoshop..but had to rush off to work, so will see the outcome on my return home!

Nope! No difference after reinstalling Photoshop. They are obviously corrupted before trying to open them in photoshop thats why their thumbnails arent showing. But I can rightclick them and say "open with Llightroom" and they do.

They aren't all recent files either...some older ones, some newish ones........no pattern at all.

If you need to you will lose very little quality by saving as a high quality JPG then resaving as a tif.

Ive bumped this up again as we have many new member who may be able to help.

I still have various TIFF files which wont show a thumbnail, have no exif showing, and wont open in photoshop "could not complete your request because an unexpected end-of-file has been encountered".

other TIFFS taken at the same time are able to be opened.

Hve found the same problem on doing a google but noone seems to know why!

Looks like I will have to go back and find the RAW of every one of these shots and start from scratch. Although I dont have them all. :(

on its way!!

Was too big to send.!

Seems i can open in Lightroom...then say open in photoshop to edit....and as long as i open as a copy and edit that, or open as a copy with lightroom adjustments it works.
The only time it doesnt work is if say open original file.

so then when in ps i save it by overwriting the original corrupted one on my hard drive.. it all works fine after that.

so, looks like i have some work on my hands... as every thumbnail shows fine in lightroom, i will have to make a list in windows explorer of all the tiffs that are corrupted first.then pick them all out one by one in lightroom  :bang:

Thanks Allan,... its saying your email address isnt valid! :D

Seems they have become corrupted in some way along the way, and going through lightroom is the way to fix them.

Ive sent them to Allan at the moment Marcel, I bet it opens when he gets it! LOL

Woohoo Allan has sorted it!

My graphics program sometimes messes up saving tif images. Normally I can open them in Elements and if save them again from there they are fine. Only problem is Elements will only save 8bit files.

Tiff files wouldn't load into CS2 or CS3. This seems to have been a bug in the beta version of CS3 and may be a bug in Lightroom - that if you alter any metadata for a tiff in LR and save it back it can create a tif that won't load into Photoshop.

To solve - I used my trusty free bit of software that I think is brilliant - Fast Stone Image Viewer - bit like Bridge but really fast (http://www.faststone.org/)
and used the batch convert to convert the files from Tiff to Tiff, thus putting the data correct.
