Hi All,

I would like to get a 40inch ish one I heard this is probably the best size to get, any recommendations

Not sure if I want a shoot thru or not
 
You can get some umbrellas that can be used as both and this way depending on the effect that you want you can change it round.

As far as brand you get what you pay for, if you get an eBay one for a fiver it is going to do the job but probably wont last as long as one from someone like Lastolite.
 
That one looks like a it's bounce only, is that what you need?
You can get a white shoot through which has a detachable black cover which converts it to bounce, I would suggest paying a bit extra and getting that style.You can have two different lighting types from one brolly.
 
You can also get 40" umbrella softboxes, in both reflective and shoot-thru configurations
 
You do, however want to consider your flash setup and what you are using it for when making your choice(s). Is this for a studio based strobe setup or Speedlight setup, small product shots, full length portrait work, group shots, outside work etc etc. Flash power will have a bearing on what modifiers you can successfully utilise. Umbrellas should be considered (in my opinion) in the same way as softboxes really, the bigger they are the larger the spread of light and the more the light wraps around the subject. Larger modifiers require more power of flash generally.
If you only have a limited power system/Speedlights you may find that the diffusion properties of a shoot through umbrella with a silver/black outer cover does not give you the results you were expecting from say a silver reflective umbrella.
So, you need to consider what you want from your modifiers, and purchase your type and size accordingly.

For example I use only a Speedlight and often for close portrait work outside, so I have 36" silver reflective umbrella and some simple reflectors as it fits what I want to do with it/them. If you want softer then go for a white reflective or shoot through or softbox.

TBH, I see an umbrella as just that, a bit of man-made fabric stretched over a wire frame. I wouldn't spend more than £15 on one. I use mine maybe once or twice a week (depending on the weather) and I can't see me ever wearing it out. I will be expanding my collection as and when I need anything different. Others may disagree with my way of thinking? but I'm all for spending money where it makes a difference to me, for example the swivel clamp that the flash and umbrella attach to. My Manfrotto 026 :love:
 
I bought the adapter from fotosense but be warned they are showing in stock but have none!! I chased it up this morning and they mailed me back saying they expect stock in the warehouse on 17th April.First time I have used them and probably the last :(
 
I went to WHE instead, £2.99 delivery and it was only a quid or so more expensive for the swivel.
 
That's a shame... I guess I timed it just right, only 3 days from order to it appearing at the door :shrug:

Timing indeed, I was a bit peeved that they didn't come to me and tell me.Must say that Warehouse Express were excellent. Ordered at 3 o'clock yesterday and it was all on my desk when I got in this morning:thumbs:

mine arrived today and it was showing in stock and was ordered a few days ago. So I'm happy.... not with 7day though, as my light stands are still somewhere!! - Would have been quicker ordering some from HK!
 
7day comes from the channel islands I think, I am sure mine took about a week to arrive.
